Edison swims. He's not very good at it, but he'll do what it takes to be near us (which includes clawing his way onto our shoulders when he's tired). His profile in the water is hilarious- head and shoulders and a bit of rump stick up out of the water, but no midsection, making him look a bizzare tricolor submarine.
Learning how to swim was a process for our little guy. He figured out how to use his hind legs at about two years and stopped being afraid of the ocean about a year after that.
Have you tried tossing a stick into the water for Charlie to fetch? :)
Totally random note: Swimming in Lake Champlain (in VT) makes Edison very soft and fluffy. We have no idea why.
My corgis are the same way! They'll go in just far enough that their feet are still on the ground, then they become reluctant to go any farther. Honey went swimming in a mountain lake the other day when I went in (she was going after me), but after a few feet of paddling she decided to turn around every time. I would love it if they liked to swim, but at least they're not downright afraid of the water like my border collie. Maybe with time and more experiences with the water they'll grow to like it more, but I won't push them too much. I can understand why swimming would be a little scary when you have such short legs!
