I want to thank everyone who has posted comments for us since we have joined Mycorgi.com. I am having a great time looking at everyone's pictures of their adorable pets. I can appreciate your talent since I can't get my Tinker to sit still for much of anything.Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her motivated to listen to me. She will not do anything for a treat. She just walks away. She does better when I have the leash on her, but I don't want to keep her leashed all the time. I'm not new to dogs and this is my second Corgi. I'm not familiar with clicker training. Do you think that would be worth a try? Where do I get a clicker?Anyway, thanks for any help you have for me and keep the pictures coming!

My Standard Poodle had Alzheimers. I finally put him down at 18 but he was pretty confused for the last year. It doesn't matter how long or short they live it is still hard to lose them! I am glad Tinker is keeping you busy. LOL

More great suggestions! I will try to pick up her food and try feeding her when I want. Hope I don't forget. She doesn't eat that much and I don't think she is over weight at 25#, is she? The closest obedience class near me is 25 miles. Can't hardly do that. But I will definetley work with her a little more. She gets a little more focused as she gets older. I, on the other hand, get LESS focused as I get older! LOL My other corgi was the perfect dog by the time she was 6. She didn't do much for tricks(I didn't really care), but she knew our routine like clock work and was very well behaved. I still miss her. She developed a very bad case of Alzhimer's. Has anyone else had this happen to their Corgi before? She got to the point where didn't know how to even eat and I had to feed her with a fork or by hand. Didn't know how to get the food off of the plate. Then she wouldn't drink. She would go to her water bowl and just stand there and look at it. I started giving her water with an eyedropper. It was very depressing. She was 14 when I put her down. Hardest thing I ever did! Anyway, now I have Tinker (should have named her 'Stinker") and she brightens my day.

I think obedience classes are a great way to start! You can find a good positive trainer and really improve your relationship with your pup! For every time she manages to not listen to you she becomes more likely to develop habits that will only get harder to live with.

I would pick up the food and set her up with a feeding schedule.
That would probably be the simplest and easiest method in telling her who's boss.
Start there and then work on having her do simple commands. It'll be easier to train her if she knows that you run the house.

Uh... won't do anything for a treat?! You sure this is a corgi??
Al & Gwynn will do ANYTHING for a treat, even the tax return. I fear they are at least a little bit hungry most of the time. They get fed twice a day, and no meal takes longer than 60 sec. Any food dropped in the kitchen is gone before it hits the floor, even if the dogs are asleep in their crates. I don't know that much about dogs, but I'd expect a corgi with access to kibble to get overweight quickly; if that's the situation and you restrict the diet, I'd expect a treat-motivated corgi to appear shortly.
If you can't get Tinker to sit still for photos, don't worry about that, just shoot bizillions of candid action photos, and 2% of them will come out great, and less posed-looking.

Love the names. Are you a baker? How could you not love a Corgi? They seem to love everyone. At least mine does. Tinker is still a little mouthy, but she is getting better. She's so quick it's hard to correct her. I have had lots of bruises. She is 18 months old. I love her to peices. She isn't much for being a lap dog. She will lay beside me in bed, but doesn't like to be on my lap unless it's in the car. Better view out the window I guess.

I was looking for a "dog". I had previously had Yorkies (McCormick, Spice, and Ginger), and since moving to Florida, and owning my house, I wanted a real "dog". I searched the internet, and was considering a sheltie, or a bordie collie. I found the Corgi..the Queens dog. Ok...so...I contacted many breeders, and settled on Celeste. I picked up Nutmeg at the picnic last year 08. I have NEVER been so in love with my dog. I've had 6 dogs, and she was the easiest to train. Her puppy-hood was rough..very mouthy. Now...I think she really understands me. For REAL. It's scary. She understands my hand movements. We did no formal training. Just bonding.

Tinker is getting to where she listens to my words when I talk to her. She knows what I'm talking about and gets excitedd about that, but she doesn't really even get obsessed with her balls. She loves to FRAP and have me chase her, but then she will nip at me . I know that's not good, but she sure loves to do those crazy eights! Maybe when she is 4 she'll be more tuned in. Like you said, they do have a mind of their own. A friend always tells me " you have to be smarter than the dog to teach it anything", guess she's smarter than me! LOL

Really don't have any suggestions. Our Chepstow was very hard to train because treats mean nothing to him. Even now at 4 he won't do any thing for a treat. Now his ball is a different story. He will do anything if it means getting to run and catch the ball. But that is why we love Corgi's they do have a mind of their own!!

Yes, she is pretty spoiled. Pretty much runs the house. Her kibbel is down all the time but she doesn't even eat it everyday. I give her about ¼ of a can of food at night when we go to bed. Guess i could try to get her interested in something for her canned food. Thanks for the input.
