Hi Jen, It is quite normal for Ace to mark over places, especially if the owner did not clean the area well and already have other dog's smell, he may feel insecure or perceived a threat in a strange place, by laying down his own familiar scent, it'll make it more comfortable to him.

There are a few things you can do:

1. Always supervise him on leash when you first enter a new place, introduce him by walking him next to you, let him smell and explore, when you see him starting to lift, tell him " ugh ugh". Timing is everything. once the orientation is over, you can let him loose but keep a close eye on him, don't let him get out of your sight.

2. Show him where he's supposed to go. Once the house tour is over, take the dogs out and let them know where is appropriate to go.

3. Some habits are hard to break, so you can invest in a bellyband, sure it will never be a fashion statement, but it'll save you from embarrassment :)
