I am at my wits end with Nutmeg. She is a ferocious chewer. I gave her one of these...http://www.nylabone.com/products/non-edible/flexible-chews/chicken-flavor-bone68648.htm.

She chewed on it for about 2 days until I saw chunks of it in her area. She is confined to my kitchen when I'm not home. I thought...ok, so she chewed a few chunks off. I took it away. This morning at 4:00 am, I heard her screaming. I ran to the kitchen to find her trying to poop. She has been wonderful about doing her thing outside, so I was very concerned, not to mention she was yelping out of control. I caught her and checked her bottom to find chunks of the nylabone in her butt. I had to pull it out, and also some hair like substance. Once I got it out, she got quiet. I let her outside, and she did the whole thing again! She was running throughout the backyard crying and yelping. Im sure the neighbors heard. I was heartbroken! I chased her down and pulled another few chunks out. (ok, this is really gross!) She was shaking and licking my feet. I took her back in, gave her a warm bath, and she seemed better. I went back to bed, got a few minutes more of sleep. I fed her normally at lunch. I skipped her morning feeding just in case. She pooped normal at noon, and then again tonight. She will chew the stuffing out of every toy I give her. She loves the squeeky toys. I am so paranoid now. What kind of chew toy/treat can I give her that will last more than 5 minutes?

I'd go with antlers. They don't splinter like bones and it takes Pooka a long time to wear one down. Just don't step on them!

OMG! I cant believe Nutty eats everything and its still a biter! I always get got her the raw bones, and she enjoys them! I go to petco and I get her the bleached bone because the ones that are cooked are bad for her. I stuff it with peanut butter and I freeze it. she chews on it for hours! Superstar barely bites, I think she has gotten better than before.

Give antler chews a try. Ein has had one since December '08 and enjoys it even up to today. They're great!

And if you're looking for toys, I heard that Tuffy's toys are durable. Check em out.

Rope toys are OUT! She loves them, but she just eats and poops them. I'll try the bully, and see how it goes. Thanks!

Finnigan is the same way. He can't just destroy his toys, he must eat them as well. He hasn't really gotten into unstuffing toys but if he is with a dog who unstuffs a toy, he'll walk around and eat the stuffing. He also eats the fur of stuffed toys so we stay away from toys that are fluffy.

We give Finn a rawhide only when we are in the room with him that way once it gets down to a size he can fit entirely in his mouth, we take it away. My fear is that he will swallow a large piece so we must keep watch.

Finn has a Kong but he's figured out how to get treats out of it too fast. I would put something soft in it like peanut butter but I have a feeling that would turn into a huge mess and our carpet is bad enough as it is.

We have given Finn a couple real bones. The beef femur bone seems to be practically indestructible and it has all the nasty marrow in the middle that he loves to lick at... yuck! Keeps him busy but is very gross looking.

On to Nylabones. Finn has had a few of these. We gave him the flexible chicken one that is about 4"-5" long and he went through these too quickly and he was biting off pieces up to the size of a marble so we upgraded to the durable one which is the white one but it seems to be too hard so he doesn't care for it. He barely leaves little tooth imprint on it. We just bought him another flexible chicken one but this time we got the “souper” size which is 8.5" and the shape is a little different from a regular bone shape. So far he's doing well with it. Even though it's the same flexible material I think the size keeps him from getting it to his back teeth and destroying it.

One thing I will tell you to stay away from is rope toys. Finnigan tore apart his first one and we weren't sure if he was eating the string or not. He spent a day throwing up around the time he began tearing it apart but we never saw string come out so we weren't sure. We gave him a new one and a couple days ago I saw him tearing it part and I pulled string from his mouth and took the toy away. Yesterday he was throwing up and this time a huge wad of string came up which means it was sitting in his stomach for two days before finally making him sick. No more rope toys for Finnigan!

Antlers. Sidney likes them and boy do they last!
I bought Sidney's from here:

not as scary but we had a similar experience with Owen and a rope toy. We caught him eating it like spaghetti.. and it came out in strings.. and got stuck. He would freak out and run around in circles until my husband had to hold him down and pull out strings and as soon as one came out.. pop.. one more popped out. So gross. We use a bigger nylabone - white one and kongs and rotating latex toys.

ive hear that bully sticks are more digestable than bones, how true is that?
Comment by Sarah C. on April 14, 2009 at 12:21am
Bully sticks arent like bones. They turn into something the consistency of chicken skin when chewed.

oh man. how sad and scary! at least she is okay now. have you ever tried kong toys? winstons kong is the ONE thing he can chew on and it has not come apart AT ALL. winston loves ice cubes too, like sam said. he especially loves them on a hot day. he'll chase them around on the kitchen floor sometimes. hahaha. winston does get rawhides to satisfy his chewing needs but i make sure to never give him excess. half the time he won't evne finish them and i'll have half a rawhide lying aorund and he won't touch it. usually the tiny like, 2-inch bones do the trick. but he does get big rawhides too. but for real, try any and all kong toys. they're awesome.
