When do you draw the line in the sand?

I was down at my local pet store picking up a few things for the dogs when I came across a moral dilemma. I was looking all over the store for Pedigree Dentasticks. I like to break them in half and give them to our three corgi's when we go out' Well anyway I gave up and ask the girl at the register where they were. Well, she went into this long diatribe about how they don't carry any of the Pedigree product because they use inferior products and how the store only carries top of the line items and so on. Don't get me wrong I try to feed my dogs top of line food. Wellness to be exact but I find that the Dentasticks work really well on my dogs teeth and keep the tartar down and are relatively cheap. She suggested I use the Bully sticks instead. I had heard good things about them so I thought I would try them. Well after buying two sticks for like ten dollars. I gave them to the dogs and they made quick work of them and now I'm out ten dollars and back to square one. So here's the dilemma! Do you do what supposedly is the "Best' or do you do what is best for  'your' dog?

Here's what I tell adopters of our dogs and cats. We feed them a cheaper food. Mostly because it is what we can afford, and what is donated. Any adopter should be able to afford to continue with the same diet. There are better foods out there, but they cost more. If you want to, are able to feed a better food, then there are choices. I give them a general outline of the benefits, what to look for, and direct them to a couple of independent stores that have knowledgeable staff who can help them.

I would never make an adopter feel pressured to "have to" feed a food that they can't afford. But I will let them know, if they want to know, about better choices. The point is to feed the dog or cat. There are no financial requirements on who can own a pet.

Many people have opinions of their own <gasp>, and that is their right. I only want the dog or cat to find a home, not to preach.

BTW, my dogs eat better than I do. I believe in a great diet for the pets that we take on. But I would be offended by that sales clerk who tried to tell me what that great diet should be.

You're welcome :)

And you do know what bully sticks are made from, right?

I would like to thank everyone for their responses. What a lesson learned. I knew that i should have gone with what I thought was best. I just want to thank the clerk at the pet store because I been cleaning up vomit all day because my corgis don't seem to digest the 'Bully sticks' I bought.

Yeah, I give my dogs Dentastix too! They all love them and the price is great at Target. Sidney is generally fussy when it comes to treats (can you believe that???) but he never refuses a Dentastix.

Sidney gets the higher-end food. My lab/dane mix has been on Beneful (ick, I know!) all his life, thriving on it and he's 16 now! Our kitties get Friskies and the oldest one is 17. Go figure.

I agree w/ everyone else, if your dogs like a certain treat then of course buy those for your dog.  Each dog is different and will like or dislike different stuff.  I'm sure the store lady meant well, and next time if she tries to sell you something just say "that doesn't work for my dogs".

Ella's got a "dental dino" that works for her, because she loves toys w/ lots of edges to chew on, but hates any kind of "dental" treat.

Einstein LOVES dentasticks.. He will not eat any other treats that are supposed to help with tar tar control and to freshen his breath, If he doesn't see dentasticks he looks at me like what are you giving me where is the goo stuff mom?!?!?! Don't worry about what everyone else says just give your dog whatever makes them happy :))

Its your dog, feed it whatever it likes!  I feed Frosty Pedigree dog food and he gets dentasticks ocassionally as well as any other treat that keeps him from eating the house while I am gone lol.  Don't ever let anyone else tell you what to do with your dog!  Frosty gets bully sticks too.  He gets everything spoiled brat!!  If you see my pics of Frosty, he is perfectly heathly and in great shape.  You have to do what you and your dog are happy with!

I feed my dog a top quality food, but I do buy some cheapie treats. He doesn't get many treats, so I buy the pedigree jumbones and cut them into 1/4 or 1/5 and give him a chunk stuffed in his kong when I go out. I also give him rawhides which you hear lots and lots of bad stuff about. I think it is just like humans, everything in moderation. As long as you are feeding a good food, an occasional crap treat isn't going to kill them!

I feed my dogs top quality food, make their own healthy treats and I buy them some "junk food treats" ... I figure it;'s just like us...I for one try to eat healthy but I'm not passing up my doughnuts:) or chips!  I also years ago bought the cheaper dog food and my dogs lived long healthy lives...corn and all but we didn't have all the options we do now nor the money. Buy the Dentasticks and don't think twice about it:)

Militant!!   That's the word I was looking for.

Funny thing:   We feed Iam's dog food and Iam's dry cat food (for canned cat food, we do use some "higher end" foods).

On here, several people said how awful Iam's was,   When we adopted our kitten, they were feeding Purina Kitten Chow.   She said there was no need to feed that fancy stuff "like Iam's" because it's too expensive and just makes them fat.

So DogFoodAnalysis's junk food is the cat rescue groups high-end caviar food.  I must admit that by feeding a more nutrient-dense food like Iam's, the poor cat only gets a few tablespoons of food a day.

My last cat was fed Friskies and lived to be 17.
