Thanks.... this forum is great. Reading about people's experiences raising a corgi puppy is very helpful.

It's hot in the summer but more like a paradise right now. The dogs enjoy the Ac and swimming in the hot months and will join us for high country trips.

Thank you for the welcome post, Geri & Sidney!  Yes, we had heard of some dogs' ability to be trained to detect cancers.  But thought that was something they could only do if they were taught how.  But, no!

We've had Corky since he was a pup.  He was just a couple months old when we brought him home.  And he was 1 1/2 or 2 when he found my husband's melanoma.

Like all dogs, he was a sniffer.  So at first my husband just chalked it up to that when Corky kept sniffing his wrist.  But Corky kept going to that one very specific spot.  And the way he sniffed there was different.  His nose would go straight there and "bonk"--like it was magnetized to it--and his nose would stay there until my husband moved his arm away.  There was no history of melanoma in my husband's family and the spot was just a fleshy colored little bump.  But it was a new bump.  And it bothered my husband that Corky so continually zoned in on it.

When we went to the doctor and told her the story, she agreed to remove it because "it bothered" my husband.  But she reassured him that it was nothing to be concerned with. However, a couple days later, she called my husband with an apology and a scary diagnosis--it was melanoma.  My husband was admitted to MD Anderson Hospital to have a larger area removed and they subsequently got it all before it got to his lymph nodes and he is now cancer free.

Since then, we affectionately call Corky "Dr Dog."  He is the one in the foreground of our profile picture.  As you can probably imagine, he is very loved and spoiled!!  He's 10 years old now, and he's our sweet little furry angel!
