I think it depends on the dog and their build at the beginning. Ace started doing this at a pretty young age, maybe 5-6 months. I just started off with him in a sit, hovering the luring hand just out of reach of his nose, and I'd click for any time he would push off the ground with his front paws. As he was reliably giving me maybe 5 cm off the ground, I'd raise the luring hand gradually until he was having to haul his torso up. Then it was just about duration - I'd start with stabilising his front paws with my hand, or on a surface like a rubbish bin lid. And eventually, he was able to hold it on his own.

It does take a while and I have a Border Collie who is absolutely rubbish at it at 9 months of age. She can hold it for maybe 2 seconds without a lure, more with. So it really depends!

So cute! I've been trying to teach Napolean this but he won't stay up on his hind legs for very long. How did you teach Ace this?
