It is actually getting better when we go outside. I can tell him no (a few times) and he will look at me but will get the idea that I am not going to play with him and slink away.

Hmmm...it might just be an Oliver thing. :) Mine does that too...once he decides that visitors aren't actually home invaders, that is.

Max is the same way. He lives for fetch. We taught him what "leave it" and "go on" means and he does pretty well. Other than that we tell people to ignore him and warn them that if they throw it even once he will never leave you alone. Most people love playing with max so usually its not a problem but its good to know your dog is going to go play on his own when told to do so.

It's tough to curb their enthusiasm when they love something like fetch so much.  It's like being a spoil sport.  But training with the leash when people come to visit is a good thing to do or if you want to take the easy way out just put away all the toys when company comes and give Lando a chewie to keep him occupied, assuming he's into chewies.  Or maybe he'll just want your guests to play fetch with a slimy chewie?

Get bleeploads of tennis balls. When he manipulates defenseless visitors into fetch, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

what i would do is have him sit and wait till he is invited to play. you use the word wait. you can do this before any one comes over or on your free time i have 4 dogs and they all know this comand it works great good luck linda

Sparty used to be like that. I taught him "Go Play" when I was done playing fetch. I decided when we were playing (not him)  and after I was done I would say "no, go play". It took a while but he eventually got it and I could have other people say it when they did not want to. Once you say No, you can not relent! He still at 12 will bring his ball to anyone that sits on the floor but if they say "go play" he lets out a big dramatic sigh and lays down.
