He was neutered on Tuesday and has been pretty bleh since. He is a very active dog and LOVES going for long walks and runs and playing and doesn't seem to understand we can't do that for a few days. When I take him out to go potty and take him right back in, he gives me this look like, "Where do you think you're going? We're not done out here." It's so sad. He has been laying around the last few days. I would love to give him something to do, but I'm worried about his stitches. Any advice to keep him happy and active, but safely?

Thanks for all the suggestions! He seems to be back to his old, happy self again. We picked him up some rawhides and he LOVED them. :)

Aw! ^____^ Poor Wrigley! I am not looking forward to putting Dex through that either. I hope he recovers soon. :D

You could try a treat dispenser (Twist n Treat from Premier, or Kong). You can fill it with treats or kibble and close it up with peanut butter, cream cheese, or liverwurst. Or, you could try "find the cookie" game. Bully sticks work well if rawhide is an issue (like Kitsie), or the Quado Bone from Dr's. Foster and Smith. I can help you find something online - just let me know!

ein was neutered a cpl of months ago and got some great advice from the fellow corgi owners of the site...rawhides! we got those ones that are good for their teeth for ein just after surgery. he just loves em! they kept him busy those first cpl of days and definitely brought a smile to his face. i think it really lifted his spirits :) you should definitely get wrigley a new toy and some rawhides.

One other thought: when we got Jack done, if he didn't have his walks he was crazy in the house. If your dog is used to daily walks and is not getting them, he is way more likely to start frapping around madly, and I would think he would be more likely to hurt himself frapping than walking.

A spay is major abdominal surgery, but really a neuter is a pretty minor procedure.

Hmm. When we had Jack done, his stitches were all internal and the incision was so small I could hardly see it. The vet said he would act like nothing happened as soon as the anesthesia wore off, and that was the case.

They said to try to keep the area dry, and of course no chasing tennis balls, but he was allowed leash walks the very next day after surgery. We took it easy the first day just to be safe, but he had his regular walks after that. Every vet gives different instructions, and of course you should follow the ones you were given. But if he's reasonably calm on a leash, I'd take him for frequent short strolls, and maybe sit on the porch with him and let him watch the world go by, so he has some mental stimulation.

I gave Bertie some of those "active" chew toys -- the balls that you stick a cookie in, and then they take a long time to work the cookie out. It wasn't much, but it at least gave him something to while away the time.
