Hello everyone!

My dream is finally coming true and my husband and I are getting a corgi!!! After some research on some breeders in the SoCal area and some shady behavior from a different breeder, we have decided to go with Poso Creek. Kim has been a dream to work with so far and she is making this whole process amazing! Our puppy is only 10 days old right now so we've got a while to wait before he gets to come home... but the preparation begins now :)

I just have a few questions to help with the transition to puppy-ville :)

We have two indoor cats. They are EXTREMELY mellow and are snugglers and cuddlers. They are not very rowdy, they are the typical eat, sleep, and sleep some more cats... Are there any tips for introducing a puppy to them? Has anyone had to introduce their cats to a corgi puppy? How did it go? Do they like each other? Are your cats now miserable about the new puppy invading their space?

Also, at how old did you get your corgi spayed/neutered? I've been doing a lot of research on the subject and I've come across some very different opinions. Some say do it as soon as you can. This is to prevent marking behaviors and to help prevent cancer. Another reason I've seen is because it helps cut down on the pet population but my dog will not have a chance to mate since he will be indoors and outdoors in the backyard and supervised when outdoors at a park. I've also heard arguments for waiting until at least 18 months to 2 years old to get them spayed/neutered because it gives them the time to develop properly because they are getting all of the hormones they need for proper development. One of my cats at only 18 months old was diagnosed with luxating patellas and bi-lateral hip dysplasia (he's had hip surgery on both hips to help correct the issue) and my vet says that it was due to him being neutered as a kitten at 8 weeks old and not getting enough hormones for proper development. Does anyone have an opinion on the issue? I just want to do what is right for my puppy because I don't know if I can go through what I went through with my cat again with a new puppy.

One more thing, any tips on places to go for puppy training?

Hi Audrey,

I actually have 6 cats, all in door and two Corgi's (Bella 4 years and Pela 6 months) both from Poso Creek. The key to getting them together is not to allow the puppy to run after them and do not allow her/him to bark at them. These things make them run and the dog will want to chase as he/she will think it's a game! Pela is  just now getting to know the kitties and I supervise her all the time when it comes to the cats. I bring one at a time down from upstairs (they like it upstairs) and hold them while sitting and let the puppy sniff the kittie. I reward her behavior with a treat when she does what I want, no barking, no running after them. It take time but it will work. All the cats would prefer the dogs are gone but they do adjust and accept them after a while.

As for spaying, follow your vets advise. Bella was about 5 month at spaying and Pela my vet did right at 4 months. Some vets want to wait 6 months? Who knows what is right. I wanted my pups spayed as early as possible because we are members of a private dog park and it requires it before they are acceptable into the park. By the way, it's the Humane Society Silicon Valley's private dog park in Milpitas if your close to that area.

I'm not sure where you live but my trainer is at a "Dogs Life" in Sunnyvale. I recommend you talk to multiple training and see which one you like. The training is really for you as your dog will do what you require of them. I did a solid year of training with Bella and she is CGC certified. Pela is less mature so I put her through puppy one and will start training the beginning of next year when she is more focused and the puppy brains have settled down.

Let me know if you have more questions? And just a side note, you choose the best breeder. Kim is wonderful and I've known her now for 4 plus years.

When I picked up Cadbury, I actually asked Kim when I should spay her. She said she spay/neuter all her dogs at 6 months of age. But that's one opinion of many so it's really up to you.
