Are you sure they can't be trusted to be loose while your gone? What about just gating off your Kitchen?

They are only 8 months old, so we crate them while at work and at night - we hope to be able to start leaving them out overnight (they are about 90%) potty trained but are concerned about while we are at work. They tend to be mischievious and chew on the wood work

Don't blame you then. They are still pups so they could get into trouble that is life threatening. Best to be safe then sorry.

I would gate them in a puppy proofed room. Once you feel like you can trust them slowly leave them alone in a bigger puppy proofed area, like gate off rooms you do not want puppies in or shut doors to rooms you dont want puppies in. We gated off the living room dining room section of the house and also the upstairs with gates. We gave Lance the rest of the house to roam if he chose to do so. When you leave them alone in the house start with small time increments and gradually work up
the time alone the puppies can be left. Do yours like to chew at all? Like wood? If so I suggest detering them with spraying apple bitter on the wood so when you leave them they wont be tempted to chew your wood belongings.

They do sell different heights of gates too, so if you think yours would jump it you can buy a taller gate.

Got a pic of your current wire kennels setup? Depending on your lifestyle, you may want to consider investing in a portable crate that can be used on the plane as well? We have 3 types of crate at our home, wire ones like what you have now, sturdy portable crate that folds and a flimsy temporary pop up crate.

We do too! We have wired one (which we no longer use, but still in the closet, just in case), sturdy portable one that folds (which we used on the plane to take ours to Japan & other places), and pop up one (which stays in the car just in case we go to friend's house & need to crate her up). It's pretty useful having different kind of crates. It IS a good investment. Dee Dee now is free to roam around the house, but we did crate her until she was 1 while we were at work. Yours are still pups. Don't worry. They'll eventually get there. :)
