The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that the
agency is investigating a series of unexplained illnesses and deaths
involving NUTRO pet food. Consumers have been complaining for more than
two years that their pets have become ill after eating NUTRO products;
many have recovered when they were switched to other foods. The company
has steadfastly denied that its food is to blame.

Thanks for posting this. I spoke with our Nutro rep who insists that Consumer Affairs is nothing more than a bunch of legal folks trying to make money. I insisted that there were a number of complaints that seemed to have validity. There was no turning him away from the 'comany line.' Here's hoping the FDA will not be swayed by big business and get to the heart of the matter.
One wonders if perhaps the company recently switched to, let us say, a 'foreign supplier' with even less regulatory oversight than our own emasculated USFDA?
When we let the companies gain control of their supposedly regulatory agencies, this is what we get. Melamine in dog food, chloramphenicol in honey.
I once asked my doc* if she thought generic drugs were as reliable as big-name brands, if the USFDA had the resources and muscle to police the industry. Her reply was, "... the courts are the Quality Assurance..." In other words, "Our products are safe enough that you'll have trouble suing us if they make you sick." Part of the motivation behind the push for tort limits.

* I initially mistyped this as "I once asked my dog...". Too bad I proofread it.
Thank you so much for posting this. It's really important for us to make good informed decisions when it comes to the health and safety of our corgis!
