Does anyone worry about their dogs being taken while out with them or having them in the workplace? There have been incidents in SC where people's pets have been stolen from the workplace (usually a retail environment) or from their homes. With the corgi's being so outgoing and friendly, I worry about them being taken. All of my corgis are microchipped and tattoo'd. I have considered posting a sign that all dogs on premises are tattoo'd and microchipped but my husband thinks I'm just paranoid. Any thoughts????

My favorite companion was stolen out of my locked fence yard, and my home is very hidden.

It is in the middle of town, but we sandwiched ourselves in a brushy area surrounded by visible houses and fields on ALL sides. We have a large yard, completely surrounded by thick brush and trees, so I felt very secure.

I walked my two corgis, down our lane (our 1 mile private drive) and a yard guy working at the neighboring home struck up a conversation over the fence.
"What cute dogs.....Are they both neutered, or are you planning to breed them? OH, you say you are going to neuter them soon? Why? Something wrong genetically? No? Then why are you neutering them? Why not breed them? Which color do people like most? Tell me about the breed....etc...

STUPID ME FOR TALKING. My favorite Dog Augustus (Tri-Colored Pembroke) disappeared three days later, Feb 15th 2009 at 5 AM when he went out to go wee.

He was micro chipped and id-tagged. I put up a 1000.00 reward in the paper...I became intimate with the pound. I put up reward posters all over...I made deals with people...put your initials on this master copy of the reward poster, make copies, email them to your friends, and I will give you 500.00 as well as the person who finds my dog 1000.00. etc..I NETWORKED. I had teachers pass out copies to their students at schools, I went to fast food restaurants and begged the help to slip a reward poster in every bag...(This trick got the most feedback), but I never found MY Dog, though I was very busy answering the phone............................................................................................................................
I did recover ANOTHER STOLEN AND HURT CORGY and a vet found his home. If I had a GPS tracker, I might have found it tossed somewhere, but I bet it would not have been on his body anymore.

At least, if you have a GPS tracker attached to your Dog and find it sin doggie, you know you are dealing with a theft and not a lost wandering dog................................................................................................................................

GPS Trackers .... I have only tried one. It is the Zoomback sold at Pet Smart. It is only accurate within 200 feet, if and when the website picks up the signal. The Dog needs to be under clear skies to get a good read....the battery only last 3 days, though the instructions state 7 day charge. (I initially gave it a full charge, and followed all directions. I am not much impressed with Zoomback so far..................................................................................................................

Still I feel I need to do all I can to keep the Corgi I have left safe. He will be NEUTERED soon as my vet gets back from an Aftosa Convention.
By the way..... The yard guy never showed up again....I tried to get info on him from my neighbor, who had hired him...GUESS WHAT?? He found this man by going to the unemployment office and asking people in line if they wanted to work for a day... wish I had known more about that hiring practice before I walked my dog by his field. I believe in giving people a fair shake, and trying to help out those in need, but I wish he had tried out a background ck first................................................................................................................................................................ It does not matter where you are, you are vulnerable, so be smart, vigilant and alert and you should be able to avoid what I just went through.

Heartbroken,
Marilyn

PS. . Forgive me for joining professional Corgis if I am not qualified, but I did want to add my lost Corgi and GPS experience to your discussion... I would like permission to join this section a member, though, mostly to read, except for the lost conversation.....Would it help that I was a Vet Tec in my teenage years in high-school? I assisted with many births, cesareans, and various other operations, for sure, but I would not trust myself to give advice for anything over a bleeding toenail at this point in my life... Even back then, I mostly cauterized, and cleaned, ... now they use lasers ... Things have changed so much. My vet just bought a new digital x-ray machines. It shows all organs, and when in Photoshop, you can bring out so much, WOW. (The pictures were way better than my orthopedics!)

I am a wife, mother, (3 kids, now 1 dog) artist and photographer.

I want to buy a Corgi named Bess from a lady I have been talking with, but she is a bit older than a pup, and my husband wants to raise a pup...I think a gal that is a year old, sweet, crate trained, fixed, etc, sounds like a good gal to get for my 11 month old Corgi who is left solo and missing August (his brother) as much as I do... Do you think my husband is right, or do you think I have valid reasoning? She was pick of the litter, but went to a show and did not like to show. She sounds like a really sweet dog. Her breeder is on top of things. Anyone have any feedback on my idea of buying Bess instead of a puppy?.............................................................................................................................
Any ideas that might help me find August? If someone bought him not knowing he was hot, but loves him, has given him a good home, and he is happy with them, I would not try to take him back, but I would love taking care of him when they went out of town, and would love to visit him often as I could.
........................................................................................................................................................................... Not knowing if he is happy and OK is so hard. I would love to find out someone is looking for a lost Corgi's owner, and my posters have just not gotten to them yet... who knows, maybe he dug under the fence somewhere I missed, and he is truly lost and not stolen. I can only hope.
His picture is up on lost dogs at ID tag.com. His chip # is 10016585.
I am so sorry you lost August. I cannot comprehend the grief of losing our baby daisy. Where do you live? Is it an everyday normal city?
I think the economy may have a hand in this. Perhaps there is a market for corgis. Was August just a pup?
daisy wont even go out to wee without me with her so I guess I should be thankful.
Again I am so sorry. Wonder if you are in the northern ca area and if I should be looking?

Marilyn,
My heart bleeds for you. What part of the country are you in?

I'm so sorry for your loss, and your comments on the GPS system are interesting. I thought about a GPS collar for our dog, and realized that the GPS unit is attached to the collar and removeable. Realistically, if someone wanted to, they could just cut the collar off the dog and drop the GPS unit. The main reason I chose not to get one for our dog.

From my understanding about the id chips, most vets and animal shelters has universal scanners that read any of the id chips, irregardless of the company the chip came from. Both the local shelters and a few of the vets in our area confirmed this. My question originated because our two cats were chipped at different vets, and our dog was chipped prior to the breeder that we bought her from (the breeder didn't know that she was chipped at all). Our dog's chip is originally registered to a vet's office in Oregon.
So, theorhetically any shelter or vet's office can scan our dog or cat and as long as we keep our registration current and notify them and the original 'chipping' office (vet's) of our current address and contact info, they should be able to help get our animals back to us.

You might try blasting the vets and shelters in your area, and however far you can manage timewise, with the chip number and your contact info, plus a photo to see if anyone has seen your loved pet.
Picture of my lost dog. More info on my first post. Thanks
