Eye Irritation- Do I need to take him to the vet?

Henry has some sort of eye irritation. I noticed last night that he was squinting a little with that I eye and when I checked it, it was bloodshot but I didn't see any foreign objects in it. So this morning I checked again and it's still the same. It doesn't seem to be bothering him though, cause he hasn't scratched at it or rubbed his face on the ground. I've been trying to do some research about it online. Conjunctivitis?

Also, does anyone have any advice on whether or not I should take him to vet? I don't mind taking him, it's just that I don't want to go running to the vet every time there's a problem, cause it can definitely be costly. But I do want what's best for Henry, so if you think I should go I'll definitely do it.

I also read about this produce called Eye-Heal, anyone use it or think it would help?

Comment by Ginny and Diggory on May 28, 2009 at 11:55pm: I would suggest a vet visit. One of our dogs started squinting recently and the eye looked just a little bad. Noticeably, we could tell that her inner eyelids were shutting even though her outer eyelid was staying more open, and the eye was bloodshot. Turned out that she had an ulcer on her cornea. The vet has to do an exam where they put a fluorescent dye in the eye to see if there's an ulceration on the cornea. They can be caused by even minor scratches, and if left untreated, the dog can lose vision in that eye. Other possibilities can range from allergies, to cataracts, to infection to glaucoma. We were able to treat the eye with anti-inflamatory and antibiotic drops prescribed by the vet and had an e-collar on her.

Comment by Sam Tsang on May 28, 2009 at 8:41pm: Go to walmart and look under the contact solution aisle, look for pure "SALINE" solution, you can buy the equate brand, squirt the eye and wash the irritated eye with plenty of it, don't worry about getting wet, if you notice Henry pawing the eye or do a face dive on the carpet, get an e-collar or an inflated collar, give it 2-3 days, the redness should go away. Also check to see if there's possible irritant in the yard or home, watch for pollen count.
