So tomorrow Freya will finally be spayed. I have the option of either getting the pain shot or the pain pill. What the pros and cons involved with both pain management? I'm trying to decide which would be the best.

Any advice will be great.

When Finnigan had his surgery they gave him a pain shot before sending him home with us to get him through the first several hours and they gave us pain pills to begin administering that night. He stayed on the pain pills for I think 4 or 5 days and he did just fine.
Good luck Freya.
Wah I hate shoving pills (however, wrapped in tastey hot dog) down the throat..
you can put peanut butter or cream cheese on it and they can lick it off and will end up swallowing the pill from licking the pill.
Finnigan would not take the pills. We tried hiding it in everything we could think of, banana, peanut butter, hot dog, dog treats etc, even tried crushing it and mixing it in with yogurt. He could smell the pill in everything and refused to eat. He'd get really excited about the food at first but as soon as he realized it was a trick he refused it. We ended up having to force it down which was actually REALLY easy and he almost seemed to enjoy it (what a weirdo). We would get out the pill, tell him to sit (at this point he'd be licking his lips with an excited look) then say open and open his mouth with a hand on top of his muzzle (after a couple times he started opening pretty much on his own) then with pill between thumb and pointer set the pill as far back on his tongue as possible then close his mouth with his head tilted up and he'd just swallow it. Such a good boy! After that of course he'd get a treat and drink some water. :)
My experience was the same as Alice's. A shot and pills. They gave Leo chewable tablets that he really liked, I made him do a trick for them so he thought it was a new treat. Worked well for us.
Nala was given pain pills. Because she eats everything, I didn't have a problem. Cream cheese is always appreciated by a corgi. ; ) Hope everything goes fine with Freya. The hardest part is "trying" to keep them away from playing and calm after the procedure. Take care.
I'm kind of worried about keeping her clean too and keeping her calm. She goes kind of crazy with her siblings. I'll have to keep her away from both dogs. Bah. It's going to be so hard, but way better than keeping her kenneled 3 weeks every time she would go into heat.
One thing our vet told us to do is take a warm, damp washcloth and gently wipe off his belly where they shaved him, avoiding the incision. He said most dogs try to lick because the shaved areas itch so much and this would help. Be sure to wipe in the direction the hair grows. We did this for Finn and he loved it. He'd lay on his back and start to fall asleep. :)

As for being calm, the pain meds usually make them a little tired so she should be willing to just relax the first couple days.

Let us know how everything went!
