Does your corgi like to swim?
We went to a park this weekend that had a big lake and met with some other corgis there. One of the corgis loved jumping in the lake and swimming around. He was awesome! Ginny definitely seemed interested and got in and waded around in the shallow area. I didn't let her go out very far, but I'd like to try to teach her to swim. I bought her a life vest afterwards and we might try going to the reservoir to swim in a few weeks.
Does anyone have any tips for teaching a corgi how to swim? Anything I need to be prepared for?

Ein CAN swim. When he was a pup, we bought a pool from Walmart and took him in with us a few times. That said, it was very obvious that while he COULD swim, he didn't LIKE it. Put him in the water and he'd swim as fast as he could to the nearest person. He enjoys wading in creeks, streams and lakes (he's never seen the ocean), but he doesn't like being in water that is any deeper than his shoulders.

i have this same problem. he always swims to me even though he gets pissed... i wonder if its fixable?

Roxy is convinced that her water bowl is in fact an indoor swimming pool. She dives in with no hesitation. We're sure she'll be a swimmer. For right now, she's functioning well as a kitchen floor mop.
What we find funny is that she screams like we're currently burning off her feet when she gets a bath, but will drench herself in the bowl with a huge grin on her face. Funny little girl!

This weekend we got a little plastic wading pool for both dogs to use in the backyard. Roxy jumped in and splashed like it was going out of style. You've never seen such a smiley dog.

The only time Brody has seen water of any size was when we took him to Lake Michigan at about 12 weeks old. He just kept trying to "herd" the waves. finally figured out he couldn't get behind them to make them move a differenct direction and gave up.

yes, she loves to swim, i have a big circle bathtub and everytime i took a bath she wanted in to swim around (when she was smaller of course it doesnt seem big enough for her to swim in now), and when we go camping we have to keep her away from the river because she will go in, the only time i let her swim is when i go with her, i am in a place where i can stand and i keep her very close to me so i can pick her up at any time. we are going to get her a kiddy pool in our yard since she loves it so much

see that look on his face? yeah. someone was mad mama threw him in the pool. every time he gets in (i chuck him) or TRIES to get in he looks at me like he's doing something wrong even though i encourage him in every way possible. i wonder if this is fixable, i would love to be able to swim with him and take him to the lake!!! if i throw him in and he gets to swimming, i clap and praise him and tell him what a good boy he is and give him treats and hug him. i think i'll buy him a kiddie pool soon and see what he thinks of that... baby steps, i guess. and the fact that mama might be a little too over protective, HAHA!!! maybe he's just naturally freaked out by water, i hope not...

Maybe it's how you're getting him in the water? I'm not sure what you mean by chucking, but at our old dog park they definately didn't want people throwing their dog in -- I think they thought it might traumatize them. I'm not a doggy psychiatrist, but maybe lifting him in gently might help. I know that part of what hooked Tucker on swimming was when I threw his tennis balls in for him to fetch. He's so obsessed with fetching that he couldn't pass it up. Eventually he really learned to love swimming. Good luck!

lol, no i don't actually catapult him, that WOULD traumatize him! no, i just pick him up and i just get in the water with him under my arm and i let go and we swim. well he swims to me and shimmies up my arm. or sometimes i walk by his side or sometimes i have a friend do the same. i mean i do everything all the dog websites have listed. and nope. he won't even get in, not even when i tell him its okay. maybe i just don't have a water baby for a corgi, maybe i have the one with the 1 in a million set of genes that hates water, haha!

Yes, My corgi Sparky disovered he could swim by accident when he got out of his depth. Since then he goes in ti the sea every day for no reason except the joy of swimming.
