How to meet the puppies
So August 16th is the day my husband and I will go and meet our breeders' puppies, they'll be 6 weeks old. She has 5 pups. 3 boys (1 fluffy) & 2 girls.
I feel lucky that we'll be able to pick our pup (of course the breeder will know which ones she is keeping) but we'll have the option to look at least 3.
Of course, the breeder will also know the personality of the dogs and will be able to match one to our lifestyle... but how does one meet puppies?
Is it true the pup will pick us?
I'm quite nervous about it all because it's been 6 months since we first contacted the breeder (and met her and the dam in May) and I'm just so anxious to know who our dog will be! So i know i have to squash all of that and definitely be calm (& assertive) when we are there.
And my husband and I have had in our mind that we want a boy and a non-fluffy, but I'm also trying to get all of that out of our heads because I'd be happy with any puppy as long as it is a match to us.
We are bringing the pup a present with us. I have a small organic cotton dog bone, that we've been keeping in our bed, so the pup will have our smell and the pup will be able to gets its' mom and litter mates smell on it, so it'll have it when we bring it home (which won't be till it's 11 weeks -- i'm losing my patience! :) )

I just saw the 4 week old pictures and I just love them all.
So any tips or advice are much appreciated.

Congratulations on getting your new pup! I bet it is hard to wait. You are so organized bringing a toy with it to see your new pup, what a good idea! I feel like our corgi picked us.....he came to us while the other corgis were busy playing! Of course our daughters just loved that he came over to them and they were sold and of course we were too. He ended up being the perfect match fo us as well because we wanted a laid back puppy and that is what he was/is! Of course he is now 2 1/2! I believe there is some truth to them picking you!

my breeder picked out neeka for us based on her personality, but either way any dog you choose will be the right one :)

A puppy may pick you out, or there may be one that reponsed to you when you call them.
Don't be too worried if they tend to ignore you, they will probably be more interested in playing and chasing each other.
Our pup just kept running around the breaders house when we were picking him out of the litter.
Try and pick out a quite one, our pup (now 8 months old) is still a chewer and digger.

When my husband went to pick out our new puppy he asked me the same thing, how will I know which one. I told him, you'll just know. He had a boy and a girl to choose from. Initially he was thinking he wanted the boy, until the boy nipped him. Lilly just laid back and gave him little licks. Since Brody is still working on the no nipping on the hands thing, he decided another one that already had that tendancy was a no go. Besides, Brody needed the "bossier" pup to help him stay in line! So it's all been working out great. Have a great time meeting the pups, you'll probably want to bring them all home!

I usually recommend that you spend time observing all the pups initially. See who is the boldest, see who retreats and spends time on their own. Those are the ones I would not choose. Look at the pups that are "middle of the road" those that are inquisitive, respect corrections from their mom, interact with others but not incessantly. Then spend some time with each of those pups one on one. Pick them up and see how they react. See if there is any interest in the toy you brought. Move it around and see if they move away or need to investigate. This is a good time to cuddle them and lay them gently on their back and see how they respond when stroked gently. One that struggles to get up is probably most independent. Put them on the floor and see if they approach you or go away from you. All these little things will help you learn which ones are comfortable at their stage of life. Mouthing your fingers would be normal. One that goes away from you or shows little interest if probably a tad on the shy side. Choosing a "moderate" pup has always worked best for me. Best of luck!

We chose our puppy 2 weeks ago. A breeder brought 4 puppies to the yard. One was a fluffy corgi, and it's a no-go for us. Second was kinda.. absent-minded, if I can say so. I felt it's not what we needed.
2 puppies stayed with us, a boy and a girl. I spent another hour deciding who was going to be my dog. We played with the puppies at the breeder's home. Then breeder took them for a walk - for us. They were both very cheerful, happy puppies. They were 8 weeks old at the time. Girl was more energetic and more developed, though. We decided that she would be really-really unhappy to stay at home alone while we are at work. The family with kids would suit her better. So, I chose a boy. He was more laid-back. I was so glad the breeder let us spent so much time with the puppies, and to watch what their personalities are.
I am brining my boy home next friday, August 15th. Can't wait!!

When my boyfriend and I went over to the breeders house to pick out are puppy we knew we wanted a girl. So they let all the puppies run around outside for us to observe (boys and girls) and there was only a total of 2 female pups. The one puppy that came up to us and kept hanging around licking us and trying to play was the one we picked. The other female puppy wanted nothing to do with us. So in a way she picked us out :)

Thank you all for your advice and tips. It's been a long month since I first posted this but we didn't know which pup will be ours until last night.
Our visit on August 16th was just a dream. How often are you surrounded by 5 puppies, jumping on you, having them nibble on your toes…? It was just a great experience.
At that point, the breeder had no idea which ones she was going to keep, so the main point of visit was to just get to know all the pups.
We wanted to keep our hands in our pockets for the first 15 minutes but when there are that many pups around it was very hard. The breeder took them out of the pen and my husband and I were like.. so what do we do? And she said, it's ok, you can touch them, so how could we resist?
We just sat on the ground and they just swarmed us. We hanged out for a few minutes and then we went outside and played and then we went back inside and they were all pooped. There was one named 'Suede' that fell asleep on my leg and I just pet him for 30 minutes while he slept. And I had 2 other pups cuddled up with me and my husband had the other 2. We never wanted to leave. We were there for at least 2 hours.
The breeder had said she thought Suede had a lot of personality and would be a great show dog, so we kind of detached from him and focused on the others.
After their nap, we gave them the cotton dog bone we brought and it was Suede that took right away and ran off and tried to keep the other dogs from getting a hold of it.. it was so cute. We should have known then....
So 3 weeks after the visit, the breeder had the pups evaluated from another breeder friend and she decided to keep the other male and she was going to let Suede go, especially since she saw how he interacted with us. For a good 5 minutes, we were a bit lost, but we remembered how Suede warmed up to us and took the bone. So the pup did choose us!
We decided to name him Caden and we’ll bring him home on Sept 20th!
