did anyone get pain medication for their dog after a spay?? and did you find that you actually had to use it?

I got a bottle of Rimadyl when the puppy got spayed and it really helped cut down on the pain and swelling the next day. I think she probably would have been fine without it, though.
It also helped a month later when she ran face first into a brick wall and skinned the side of her nose and bruised her face.
That's my girl. A little genius.
haha aawww. the vet never gave us any, neeka just got spayed today and i read that most people get medication, im just curious if i should go back and ask for some just incase.
Most veterinarians do provide medication for three days following surgery. Remember animals are very stoic and do not have the ability to express their pain levels. Surely there is pain involved in a surgery as invasive as a spay. I do use the medication to keep my dogs most comfortable.
If I remember correctly, my vet provided pain medication for a few days and antibiotics. I had considered going to another vet that advertised low prices but when I went there, they actually divided just about every aspect of the procedure into different costs. The advertised price was just the actual surgery itself. That office also priced pain reliever separately and as an option. In total, it would have cost more than my regular vet. But those tactics already put me off.
thats pretty awful. we only have one vet here...im just suprised she didn't give me anything or offer (and of course i didn't think) i don't think they were trying to rip me off or anything because neeka had a mild ear infection that i asked about before she was getting spayed and they just gave me the medication and didn't put it on my bill for the spay. last time we went they also gave me hairball medication when she swallowed a small piece of foam.. i think i will run down there today and get some just incase. neeka doesn't seem in pain but i know i would be and alot of the time dogs dont show it. thanks for everyones replys. im already having to keep her from being active! last night she woke me up at 2 am licking my face and wanting to go outside and while outside was trying to go for her ball!!, and i was up with her until 5 since i caught her trying to lick herself. i need to get some bitter apple today too to put around the site.
We got the anti-inflammatory and the pain relief with Penelope's spay. The night of the surgery and the next morning were really the only time she needed it. She was back to her normal self by the second day after the surgery--very hard to keep her from running and jumping.
I was provided with antibiotics, and I already had some metacam (anti-inflammatory) at home. My vet said to give her 4 drops for the first 5 days.

I think a little pain is good- it keeps them from over doing it.
Our Vets don't provide us pain medication following spay procedures--they give a fairly long-lasting pain med following the surgery at the clinic. One reason they gave is that the pain, although typically not severe, keeps the dog a bit more quiet. They do say if the dog seems very uncomfortable to call and they will provide something. Now having said that, each time we have had a dog spayed, my biggest issue was still keeping them quiet. I keep a bottle of Rimadyl on hand at home, but never have used it following a spay.
I think Rimadyl is just nice to have on hand for the off injury that has swelling.
hmm... we got nothing ourselves either and I think that may be one of the reasons she fussed with herself so much.. (funny story I posted months back lol)

they offered a relaxent after so many days which they give dogs with fear of thunderstorms (they get all melllooowww maannn and all duuuddee life is awesome) but we decided to try a few more things instead of drugging her up and she turned out fine :D
