Introducing a new dog

I am currently owned by a two year old pembroke corgi. My husband and I are thinking about rescuing an adult corgi. I'm curious about others experiences with introducing a new dog (particularly adults) to an adult corgi's home. I'm terrified that they might not get along and the new dog will have to be returned (this would absolutley break my heart). My corgi is by no means aggressive towards other dogs, but she will growl a bit sometimes. Does the dog's gender play any difference in your experience? Is there a difference between introducing puppies and adult dogs? Thanks for your help!

it depends on the dogs personality, either way it'll take some time and patience for everyone to get along. It really doesn't matter if it's a pup or an adult, sometimes the younger one turn out to be the alpha dog and sometimes pack order change several months down the road. Sometimes males may bring territorial marking, sometimes females may be overly protective, so i can't say one is better than the other. I think what matters the most is the perfect dog that suits your lifestyle.

One of the recommendations I make for folks that are considering adding a rescue dog is to have a pal with a friendly dog visit with some frequency. Typically if dogs are friendly in the company of other dogs, are well socialized they will learn to accept one another. We also recommend opposite sex additions. Usually two neutered males will get along better then two spayed females. Girls are often bit more sharp then boys. There are many good rescue organizations out there that will help you in making the decision as well as a good match. Always be mindful of food and special treats. Many well behaved corgis can get testy at this time.
