We're learning to give Milo more healthy treats so he can lose some weight. I know rawhides, milkbones, and all the doggie cookies are very tasty for him. But, they tend to have higher calories.

Anyone ever bake some healthy dog treats?
Anyone give their dogs some fruits or healthy "human" food?

Cruise...4 months...just loves cheerios!
never thought of that. I know my parents used to give Andy nilla wafers.. they're sweet, but they're pretty bland and Andy LOVED those.
I went to the pet store the other day and bought from the doggy bone bar, which I know sounds unhealthy but they had such a variety of treats....my favorite is the Chocolate Chip Cookie, it smells just like a real chocolate chip cookie and its kinda chewy like the chips ahoy chewy cookies. I didnt taste it, but I smelled it...Wyatt loves them.
Sometimes I use his own food...I just hype it up and then toss him a kibble piece. he gets so excited I don't think he even notices. I mean he isn't savoring it regardless what it is, just gulps it down and looks for more. But I give him all different kinds some are prob very fattening but all things in moderation and exercise I feel he will be fine.
I buy those baggies of baby carrots and they love them. Any veggie will do but garlic and onions are bad for them and peas always makes them vomit or have diarrhea. Also, grapes are bad for them. But definately go for the good healthy stuff. I buy milkbones for their kennels at night as a special incentive to get in there. They love them. Little dabs of peanut butter (since it's fattening) is a great way to learn tricks. Also chewies. The dental ones are the best. But they only get a chewy maybe once a week. They get terrible gas from them if they eat too much so I know they can't be that great. They're pretty spoiled pups. They just don't know it.
After reading some of these posts my dogs aren't as spoiled as previously thought. Holy moly, some of you all must spend a small fortune feeding your dogs. I don't even eat that healthy. lol!
A couple of things you might try:

At PetSmart we have chicken filets and nuggets on the treat aisle that are just that: chicken. They're dried (kind of like jerky), but simply chicken. Nothing else. Healthy and low in fat.

You also might try using Mini-Wheats. Not the frosted kind - too much sugar. Just plain old Mini-Wheats. They're fiber and pretty good for the dogs. For small dogs, Cheerios make good treats.

Otherwise, we stay with more natural stuff: Old Mother Hubbard has good biscuits. Paul Newman has organic treats. They're on the treat aisle; you just have to look for them.

Good luck!
winnie gets veggies and bananas when we are making something. she gets ice cubes when it is hot out we give her a penut pbutter kong for special things (ie letting us trim her nails) she gets the freez dried liver for training and solid gold and sojos treats broken into bits on walks or refresher training. she gets a lot of her own kibble for treats.

I really love the smell of the sojos apple cobbler.... it smelled so good i tried it myself, and it tasted pretty good too. can't say that about liver or fishy treats :)
We give Lily bananas also. I need to get some apple and chop it up for her. I know she would love it. We get the Blue Buffalo health bar thingies from PetsMart for her and she loves them. Her favorite is the Apple and Yogurt, but she also likes the Peanut Butter ones as well.
Lots of raw carrots, green beans, snow peas, yellow beans, raw apples, celery, turnips, potatoes. I try to stay away from anything processed, with colourings, preservatives and other chemicals. The more organic, the better. He gets the odd milk bone (I carry a little ziplock bag in the car) for when I need a treat and don't have veggies with me. Mine isn't crazy about peanut butter. Basically eats what we eat for dinner every night but raw and much smaller portions and nothing processed. He eats this over his Canidae food. I'm going to try him on organic tubs of no-sugar applesauce and a health yogurt...haven't gotten around to it yet.
Baxter loves bananas and apples.. He loves fruit in general, we went to my uncle's house the other day to pick cherries, I had to get him out from under the tree because he would have eaten the cherries on the ground until he got sick hehehe. I feed him veggies too as treats. Carrots, greenbeans, etc. He gets a spoonful of cottage cheese or yogurt with his kibble sometimes, he gets a little picky with his kibble. I do have store bought treats, I feed him Zukes mini naturals for training. They have good ingredients and are only 2 calories each, so I dont worry about giving him some of those. He gets a cookie before bed, the ones I have now are the Blue Dog Bakery low fat cookies. He loves them, he gets excited for bed time. =) I like the treats and products that Merrick makes, they are all natural and pretty much just dried meats made in the US. Though like all of the other good for them treats...they are pricey. But they do last a while. Oh if your pup likes icecubes, here is a snazzy little treat they will love.

Fruity Pupcicles

1 quart orange juice
1 banana mashed
1/2 cup yogurt

Mix all of these ingredients together in a container with a spout so you can pour the mixed contents into an empty ice cube tray. Let them freeze and they make a great treat for your pup on a hot day. Heheh I tried one myself...they are tasty! =)
I was just visiting a friend who is a nutritionist, and she gives her dogs small bites of turkey hot dogs. I may try the same.
