Accidentally Bought Puppy Food For My Dog - Safe To Feed?

So the closest stores to us never sell the brand of food we buy in the correct size so we branched out and went to a new store. Same thing so we just bought the same brand but different flavor of food. When we got home I noticed that I had gotten an 11 pound bag of puppy food.

Is it alright to feed Clutch the puppy food? He is just over a year old. I really do not want to take it back because it takes 45 minutes to get to the store and I will not be going that way for a while. If it isn't a good idea to feed it I will then make the journey to exchange it.

Any information would be useful. Thanks guys!

Hi Brittani, it depends on the store's return policy, some of them does mail return, find your receipt and give them a call. I would buy the right food and return / donate this bag.

I wouldn't feed it. A food change like that may cause upset tummy. I don't think one bag of puppy food will do any damage long term but you will have to go through the hassle of a slow food change over a week or two only to have to buy the original food anyway and then do the slow food change again. My guess is the month or so it would take to do the slow food change twice would mean you would be close to running out of the puppy food by then anyway. To save time and hassle in the long run I'd just return the food and buy 2 bags of the other so you have it on hand or get bigger bags. I buy a 30 pound bag for Franklin and store it in an air tight plastic container and it lasts for about 2-3 months and stays fresh (now that I am feeding 2 dogs it doesn't last quite as long).

You  say it's the same brand, so  I would not worry about it, except I'd give a little bit less since fat content is probably higher, then you can return to the adult food when this bag is finished..

You might have an upset stomach for a very short while or maybe not. It's certainly not going to do damage to her/him. I wouldn't worry about it. If you have some of the other left, then mix the two or a bit otherwise, just feed it. Dogs are tough and they will be fine.

I'd get a bag of the correct food and just mix in tiny amounts every day to use it.  Maybe even use it as treats.  I had a coupon once for a free bag of Purina Pro Plan.  I got the Salmon.  It was the cheapest bag of treats I ever bought and lasted me ages.  :)

Love your idea, Beth. I use Scouts regular food as training treats. Never thought about getting something completely different to switch up the taste. I will think about it next time I get treats.

Unless it's like 20lb bag, I would not worry much about it.  Can you compare calories and nutrition between the two online?  Maybe it's simple as adjusting the amount served?
