Aggression Over Toys- How to Prevent This and How to React

Hello all,

I just had a very scary moment. One of my friends came over and brought his pup, Jaxen, a miniature dachshund. He and Indy have had a lot of interactions. We haven't had any problems in the past. Usually, they just run around and sometimes wrestle. Jaxen is usually soaked- Indy 'gnaws' on him, but very gently. I'm not sure what that's all about....

Tonight, Jaxen took one of Indy's toys. Indy reacted with an attack. There was growling, barking, gnashing of teeth, and Indy then had Jaxen around the neck. We had to pull them apart. Jaxen was so scared, he peed all over the floor.

Luckily, my friend was quick to react. I wasn't sure what had happened and I was too scared to get in the middle. I tried to pull Indy back, but he was putting his full force into the attack. I have separated the dogs for the remainder of the evening, but Indy is whining trying to get to his friend.

What can I do to keep this from happening again? I do not want Indy to be an aggressive dog. Also, how should I react?

Dog-to-dog possession guarding is easier to manage than to change. Honestly I would pick up all the toys and food bowls if they are going to be loose together. As soon as you have a chance, take them for a leashed walk together and then if there is a somewhat neutral place where you can let them interact to make sure they are ok, that would help if they have a good history together.

I think I will just take the toys away as you suggested. We haven't had any problems before, though toys have been present in the past. It just really surprised me because they do have such a great history. They have taken many walks together, played once every two weeks (I see this friend every other Sunday or more), and even eaten together. They share the same bowl when drinking. Thank you, Beth!

I hadn't really thought of it that way. It makes complete sense, though. That is what is ingrained in them- protecting their resources. I'll try your suggestion with Indy. Thank you for your input, Amy!
