I was having no luck getting liquid Kaopectate (the old formula) down my Corgi when he had diarrhea. In desperation i slipped a couple of Pepto tablets, broken in half into hot dogs hoping he'd ingest the Pepto. He did and when the diarrhea and bleeding continued I took him to the weekend Animal Emergency Clinic. To make a very long story short the tablets never dissolved and were very evident in x-rays. At the time I couldn't think what they were. Much later when my own vet opened Joey's abdomen and massaged the foreign objects out in his stool she discovered what they were. When the emergency vet asked me what it could be I had no idea......after being up all night with a sick dog I just wasnt' thinking clearly. Much, much later (about $1500 later) I did the "I should have had a V-8" smack in my head.....of course it was the tabs.......Pepto and Tums have CALCIUM CARBONATE as a binder which DOES NOT dissolve in dogs......even people are supposed to CHEW them..............aaaaaaaaargh!!
The old-style liquid Kaopectate is available as "ENDOSORB SOLUTION" from California Vet Supply.
