These are two totally separate issues on two different dogs but I figured id put them both in one post. Lets start with the bloody pee...

We went to the beach today and Kirby went crazy and played like a maniac. He ended up drinking quite a bit of sea water while we were there despite my efforts to stop him and as expected ended up with blow out diarrhea. By the end of the trip he was basically just pooping clear liquid. A few hours later he was whining and restless in the car so we pulled over and he immediately jumped out peed what looked like pure blood I checked his belly to be sure and he had blood on his belly hair and drops on his feet. He had an accident in the car as well on the way home but that pee was really dilute, no blood. Has anyone seen blood in urine after a beach trip and drinking saltwater? He seems fine now but I will probably take him to work with me tomorrow just to be safe. Input would be great.

Now onto the paw pad issue. This year seems to be really tough on Franklin. He has had chronically tender paw pads all spring/summer. After any trip we take he is limping and walking very gingerly. He seems to have really soft/smooth pads and has rubbed his callouses off his pads at some point and can't seem to build them up again. Does anybody have ideas on how to help him out? I have yet to find a booty that will stay on his feet and have tried about 5 different brands and types. He has trouble walking on uneven surface, gravel, or warm surfaces/grass/sand etc

No idea about Kirby, but they do make a wax for dog paw pads (used by sled dogs) that may be helpful.  It is Musher's Secret (and there are probably other brands out there)

The only thing I could think about the blood in Kirby's urine is possibly the kidney's being overworked trying to process all that salt from the water. I honestly don't have a clue, but that's what I would have thought. I sure hope Kirby is alright, and it isn't anything serious. Let us know how things turn out.

As for Franklin, Tomahawk also tends to get sore paws since he likes walking over sharp and pointy rocks. Whenever I see that they bother him, I put some musher's secret on his paws and wrap them up for like 15 minutes so he doesn't try to lick it up. It seems to help him out, but it's possible that Franklin has more sensitive paws. Poor Franklin. :[

Hey Melissa,

When humans do one of those body cleansing things to clean out their system, they would sometimes do a salt water flush.  Drink 8 oz of water with salt and everything the body will be gone.  It will exit the body violently.  The sheer force of it can probably do damage to the toilet.

Any how seems like Kirby might have given himself a bowel cleanse.

But as for the blood, I don't know. I just hope there wasn't any damage to his kidneys.  I heard if you punch a human hard enough in the kidneys.. you can force them to pee blood.

Hope everything is ok with your pups!

I don't have any ideas for the issues you listed here, but I was wondering how Kirby and Frank are doing in general? Has Kirb settled into the new flat?

Hi Melissa,

Blood in urine can be trauma / infectious / inflammatory. I'm gonna rule out salt water / kidney link, not that it can't happen, just not within that short timeframe.

As far as paw pads goes, avoid wet sanding them is your best bet, musher's secret helps, but you'll need to apply it generously and get them in real good. Vet wrap them before activity? just a thought.

Kirby seems to be totally fine now. Not sure what caused the bloody urine but it was just that one time and never again. I suspect it was just severe dehydration from the running, horrible diarrhea, and salt water. Seemed like when he was able to drink a ton of fresh water everything went back to normal.

Franklin is still having his issue of course. I will try the mushers secret. I have just noticed this year his feet are sooooo tender. On warm surfaces that I can walk barefoot on he will pick up one paw and then the other or just sit down. Since he has no dewclaws I can't keep vet wrap or booties on when he starts playing hard in the grass. They do seem to help though when he does have them on.
