This may be a silly question...but should all dogs be able to catch? Our two older dogs have no trouble catching treats tossed at them, but with Sidney, he just lets the treat bounce off his forehead! I wonder if it is a matter of age, or does our baby lack depth perception? It's comical in a way, but I can't help but worry a little. He's 16 months old.

Can all your dogs catch treats that are tossed at them?

Albert catches incredibly well.

Tori never, ever has. She either completely misses, doesn't try, or it bounces off of her nose.
Mine cant catch, but to be fair she has a walleye.
What do you mean by "a walleye"?
One of her eyes is slightly off center to the outside. Like a lazy eye.
Oh, a lazy eye! I have one, so I can relate. I have no depth perception either.
Emma doesn't even try to catch.
The first dog I had, a german shepherd, could catch ANYTHING thrown at her. Dax...not so much. Like the others, he doesn't even try. Heh.
I tried to see if Brian could catch things (food, toys, etc) when he was about 6-7 months old, and basically he'd just let the food hit him on the head then realize that it was food and go eat it. So then I essentially had to "train" him to catch, which involved throwing the food (popcorn is good to start out with) toward him and saying "catch". If he didn't catch it (or at least make an attempt), he didn't get to eat the treat. Eventually he caught on to the fact that catching it in his mouth meant that he always got the treat, and thus started to actually catch the food in the air. That has now transfered to toys, and he now jumps and twists in the air as he catches things.
Ours can catch treats in mid-air, but not without some training and yummy treats for motivation :)
Ginny can't catch either. I have tried gently tossing the treats to her and they just usually bounce off her head and land on the floor. She does like to toss her treats in the air and pounce on them. The only time she just gobbles them up is when there's another dog around who could potentially steal her cookies. Otherwise, she is sort of cat-like and bats them around with her paws for a minute and then sort of grabs the treats and tosses them in the air a few times before she starts to eat them. I think she must be trying to kill them or something. It's cute.
Well, I'm glad to know SIdney is not the only one. He's probably wondering "why are they throwing things at my head?" Maybe we'll try the training, like Brian and Sam succeeded with.
Kirby catches like a CHAMP! His toys anyway...he catches the straight ahead throw, the off the wall throw, even over his shoulder when necessary! late this summer he managed to catch a few frisbees too! I don't think I've ever tried throwing treats to him, but you can bet I will this afternoon!
