Cats n' Corgis, with a twist
Hello all, I just found this site and am anxious for some intelligent advice so I thank you in advance. A year ago I met the girl of my dreams and she has just moved in with me after a long period of dating. She comes with a sweet, 6yo, female Corgi named Ferris who I am happy to add to our family. I have two cats which I rescued off the street here in Brooklyn already in residence. Both of us are devoted to our animals so thinning the herd is not an option.
Here's the twist- for now and into the forseeable future (due to the economy) we live in a very small, one bedroom, fifth-floor walk-up. I have several questions about how to work this out. First, while Ferris (the Corgi) is fantastic with me on the leash when I walk her, in the apartment she is totally fixated on the cats, to the point I've been bitten a couple times while trying to exert my dominance. That has calmed down a bit in the two weeks since she's been here, but still she is fixated on the younger and livelier of my two cats. We've done the child gate but when your apartment only has two rooms it becomes impractical- they are going to have to get along eventually. At this point the older cat and Ferris ignore eachother, but my 8 month old cat incites Ferris with a lot of circus style running and jumping. Any advice or is it just an issue of time?
How do I best let Ferris know I'm dominant?
Anyone know how to get a Corgi to climb five flights of stairs? We don't mind carrying her, but since her breed is so independent I wonder what the best course of action is- she has no problem going down all the stairs! LOL

Is Ferris and the younger cat friendly toward each other? Is Ferris trying to herd the cat? my corgi tries to play with our cat but the cat doesn't want to play and I just let them be since our cat just doesn't like dogs.
You need to let Ferris know that you're the leader. Hopefully this site will help: http://www.cbrrescue.org/articles/packleader.htm
You can try putting treats on each step of the stairs. (really small bits, since there's 5 flights of stairs!)

Max my corgi is almost 4mo old and I have 2 cats. 12 and 13 yrs old. Yes, the cats tease the dog and the dog chases the cats. They will learn to get along, maybe not friends but will put up with each other it just takes some time. Max has been here about 2 mo and thing are getting better. You will just have to wait. As far as the stairs what we did was one of us went to the top of the stairs and called max. He now goes up and down without a problem. One step at a time at first.

As for the cats, get a spray bottle, and when she starts to herd the cats or go after them; spray her in the face and tell her leave it. Or, if she is already trained to leave it, tell her then. Of course, the kitten isn't any help, not with it frapping around the apartment; Ferris just wants to join in.
Just be consistant with the training, and she'll learn who is dominant. You're still new to her, and your girlfriend is the real master in her eyes. It's going to take a little time. Kindness and patience works best with corgis.

HAHAHA. She still thinks she in on vacation. Give her some time. We inherited a cat from my father that had to be placed in a nursing home due to Alzhiemers, she HATED our dogs. Naturally she soon gave birth to kittens after we brought her to our house. I am happy to say that momma cat has gotten to a point that she likes our two dogs and her two offspring think they are dogs. So just give it time. You will come home one day to find them curled up on your sofa together. Merry Christmas!

My Corgi is 10 months old and we've had her since she was a baby so she's been around our numerous cats just about all of her life. Unfortunately she still gets overly excited around them. However she has come to learn her limits with the different cats in the house. The kittens tolerate her her poking them with her nose.. so she does that to them all the time. However a couple of the older cats have put her in her place so she knows they do not like play that way. She also completely hates one of our cats because he has attacked her a few times. So hopefully your cat will let your corgi know her limits.

Sidney is 17 months old. We have two cats, an old one (15 years) and a younger one (around 5 years). Sid will leave the older one alone, but constantly is after the younger. Since we have had to find space to feed the cats up on a spare table, Pippin (the cat) does not have to be within reach of Sid much at all. He has learned to navigate the room from desktop to countertop and so on. SId does tend to give chase and will definitely perk up if we say Pippin's name...he knows who we are talking about! They have learned to deal with each other well enough. Our home is quite small so there is really no place for Pippin to escape except by going up. Drives Sid nuts!
The spray bottle is a good tactic. It has worked with other problem behaviors for all three of our dogs.
