Well we are having our first heatwave here in Sacramento and its only April so I'm a bit concerned about the summer! It gets really hot here in summer and Franklin has severe heat intolerance. I've bought him various cooling collars and vests but I'm wondering about cooling beds. Does anybody have one? Or have you heard of any before? He is so miserable in the summer even with a fan on him all night, hoping maybe somebody might have some ideas on how to keep him cool. While I like this sun, I'm not ready for my evening cuddles to be over :-( He gets too hot to sleep with me in the warm weather so that's the big downfall of summer. In the winter he turns into such a cuddle bug and I need to soak up all the corgi hugs before the warm weather returns again.

I made a cover out of an old sheet to encourage him to use it.  Worked like a charm!

How has the bed held up over time?  Any leaks?

No leaks!

Thanks Rachael. I remembered somebody on here had one but couldn't remember the brand. I think I'll get one from Amazon and give it a try. I'd love to buy it at Petsmart to see if Frank likes it but its about $30 cheaper on Amazon. I'm sure Kirby will use it either way, he's not real picky! Lol.

I bought some shipping freezer packs for Lilly.  Its actually an Ice Pack that is about the size of a manilla envelope, and I just covered it with a pillow case.  Lilly used them when she was a puppy.  Although last year I gave her a puppy cut.  I didnt shave her, but I did give her a trim.

yeah I am thinking of doing a summer cut on my boys. Kirby has a thicker coat than Franklin, but Frank has a health condition that realy makes semi-extreme temperatures dangerous for him. Thinking of doing like they do with horses and give him a partial cut along his belly and jugular veins. I don't want to shave anything visible though so it may not be worth doing lol.

Thank you, Melissa, for posting your question. While we have not had super hot weather here in New Hampshire, it has been warm and Lucy, too, is proving she does not like the heat and sun too much and I've been worried about this the last couple of days. It sounds like a cooling vest or collar might be helpful to her on our walks.

I bought one, cooling bed, last summer during our horribly hot Iowa summer (worse than usual). Rocky and Rosie refused to use it. Not sure why. Rocky laid on it once for half an hour or so and that was it. I even made a cover for it. I returned it, with some difficulty! I freeze water in a butter tub and then turn it out in a bigger bowl for them to lick and they like that. Rocky is not a heat guy. He really wilts in the heat. We don't walk during the day but wait til dusk or early morning. I've misted his belly for him and that seems to help. Have you tried those raised beds made from plastic or aluminum tubing and have a nylon fabric sling type bed? I think they are called cool r beds or something like that. They allow air to circulate under the dog so might be better. Good luck!

We bought this type bed to use in the car when we vacationed in New Mexico in August one year.  We would take it in the hotel room at night so it would benefit from the air conditioning .  It really helped (was heavy to bring in and out ) and our dog loved it.  Never leaked. We also had two small fans going :-)  Sorry I do not remember the brand name.

I was glad to learn this info about cooling beds.  It was so hot here in March that I have already trimmed Randy.  I have 3 bades for an Oster A5 (10, 5F,3), which leave 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2".  i also have a bunch of other little clippers that I use on under parts but with that selection I can cut the under side shorter that various areas of upper.  I try to use the 3 to go back from the head so that it isn't too dreadfully short.  Last year, I cut him shorter than I liked but it grows very fast if you don't cut it down to the skin.  This is my second fluffy that is heat intolerant so I am not looking forward to the coming summer. I have given him ice cubes which he likes to chew but I like the idea of freezing water in tubs or other device to leave for them when I am away.  I will check on Amazon for the beds but I have some large ice packs for my back and they might do but also might get ruined.

What a great idea and talk about saving money. Dino likes the bathroom title but only when I am in there. He thinks it is only cool on his belly when I am in there
