Corgi Hybrids
It's become a very popular thing to create designer dogs or hybrids. While there are a couple that have been around for quite some time such as the Cockapoo, most are relatively new. Examples of such dogs would be the Puggle (Pug+Beagle) or Labradoodle (Labrador+Poodle). Of course the Corgis could not be left out of this quest for a better breed and there are new models in the works as we speak (though none have caught on yet). I think Corgis are perfect the way they are and I'm sure others here would agree, but nothing is ever good enough for some. Here are some of the Corgi hybrids I've encountered. Please share any that you are aware of, or just voice your opinion on the topic of hybrid breeding.

I wouldn't call these designer dogs, but at the Humane society we see some odd mixes. My favorite was the German Shepherd Corgi mix. He looked like a German Shepherd squished down into the shape of a Cardigan. He was an adorable pup, and I'll bet he'll become one smart dog.

And let me add, as a pro-active defense against shelter criticisms: Yes, we sent him to a good home, after interviewing the potential adopters and evaluating behavior to make sure it was a good match. And yes all our dogs and cats and rabbits are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, vet-checked and treated, micro-chipped and sent out as healthy as possible.
Unfortunately, most of our dogs are pit-bulls, as noted earlier. The little dogs are adopted very quickly, as was this little corgi-shepherd. A great little pup.

Wait... was her mother red and white, a Cardigan? If so, I know exactly which litter your puppy came from. Would you like to have pictures of her relatives?

This is my brother's dog, Rocco. He's a rescue that was thought to be a German Shepherd/Basset Hound mix at first, but recently my brother told me he may be part Cardigan Welsh Corgi. What do you all think? (Sorry this is the only picture I have of him...)
That question aside, Rocco suffers from severely turned out front legs due to his unusual mix. One of them actually turns almost backwards. He's very happy with my brother though, who is taking care of him and any medical problems very well.

It's hard to tell by that picture but I'm thinking GS and Basset could be right. That's too bad that he's having health problems but he's lucky to have your brother.

I should point out that he wasn't bred this way...just happen in nature. We got him from the Humane Society!

He's a cutie. :) It's like the head of a Corgi with the body of an ACD. Looks like shorter fur than a Corgi.

Yup, and I am sure you can imagine that he is quite energetic! I love him to pieces though. My little mutt.
One thing that I found strange is how small he is. He weighs about 16lbs soaking wet...and most Corgi's a larger than that no? So I figured a Corgi/ACD mix would be larger. But not in this case...

yes a Corgi usually is larger and an ACD definitely is. Do they know for sure that those are the breeds or was that a guess?

That is what we were told by the Humane Society and vet. We haven't done any blood work though, and he definitely looks like both of those breeds...only mini.
