Corgi Mix - Trouble walking, lethargic. Seeking any input please! :)
Hi! My Corgi-Lab mix (Rocky) has been experiencing trouble walking since Sunday. He is around 8 years old. He was lagging quite a bit on our daily walk and since then he's been unable to walk up the steps, jump on the couch and even has trouble getting up the short step onto the porch. He's been laying around a lot and hasn't been his usual self. When I try to take him for a short walk, he walks extremely slow. He's not barking as much either. And is unable to stand for long.
I took him to the vet on Thursday (not my usual vet). He dismissed him by saying it was arthritis. He refused to do any x-rays. He told me to get him to lose some weight and that was it. He's a few pounds overweight but not obese. I also started him on Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM.
A few other notes about Rocky... he has the Corgi stubby legs and has a stocky build. His front two middle nails are really worn. I've noticed before if I rub his lower back, his legs will go down pretty far. But I'm not sure if this is just a reflex. He's never really been graceful on his feet.
My other dog (a Dachshund/Beagle mix) has arthritis, she's 13-1/2. She has never acted like Rocky has been acting. And she moves faster on the walks than him. She's also "low to the ground".
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced any problems like this with their Corgi/Corgi mixes. It's breaking my heart seeing him like this, he's completely not himself. I've had him for almost a year and I'm not too familiar with the Corgi breed. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!! :)

Good news!! Rocky started getting better yesterday! He ran on our walk, has been playing with his toys, barking and even jumping up on his favorite recliner! He's back to his spunky self! I'm not sure if he maybe he had a sprain or what the problem was. I looked up the symptoms of arthritis and he was displaying those symptoms. Maybe the Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM started to help him. I'm keeping a close eye on him and trying to keep him from overdoing it.
Thank you all so much for all your advice, concern and kind wishes!! I think all of your kindness helped Rocky feel better!! :)

That's great! Did you do the "double dosing" thing for the first month or so? Sidney just finished that part and now he gets it every other day. I also started with "Move Free" from Costco, finished my double-dosing and am now on maintenence, and my knee feels great!

Thanks! Yes, I did. I only started it a week ago, so I'm not sure if it kicked in and helped him. Has it been helping Sidney?

It's hard to say. SIdney had FHO surgery at the same time he started the glucosamine. He's taking Dasuquin chews. SO he's been rehabbing from the surgery - he's sore from surgery and re-learning to walk on the bad leg. I guess time will tell. Last weekend he turned a corner and seems to be moving a lot better!

Glad to hear he's doing better. I'm still having trouble finding things on here and wondered what type of surgery he had. Give the patient a belly rub from me!

If you click on Sidney's picture it will go to his page, scroll down and find his blogs. It was FHO - Femoral Head Ostectomy - to help ease the pain from the hip dysplasia he inherited. They lop off the top of his femur so it doesn't rub up against the pelvic bone anymore, turning a ball-and-socket joint into a floating joint.Since he's only 3 and in good physical condition he was an excellent candidate for the procedure. Only other real choice was to put him on pain meds for the rest of his life, with limited mobility. Can't do that to a young corgi, you know?

Our Sophie has "slow days" where she is very lethargic, doesn't want to walk or play, won't come up on the couch even with her stairs. She did have a bout of blastomycosis when we first got her and I wonder if it's a leftover from that. Then she also has seizures, so it may have something to do with that. Are the top sides of Rocky's nails worn? That's "knuckling under" and can be caused by arthritis among other things. We had good luck with our first dog with acupuncture for arthritis and the effects were seen quite quickly for her. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear the problems Sophie has had. :( The "slow days" sounds exactly how Rocky was. What is blastomycosis? Yes, Rocky's nails are worn. I hope Sophie is doing okay! Thank you for your response!! :)

Blastomycosis is a ground fungus that grows in the soil around lakes and rivers in this part of the country. Dogs & people breathe in the spores when they disturb the soil by digging, gardening, etc. The spores lodge in the body and become a yeast, growing in the warm, moist environment inside the body. It can cause serious damage and can even be fatal if it settles in the brain. Scary stuff. Hope you figure out what is going on with Rocky!
