Cory is hyperventillating?
Ok so our little pembroke Cory is 5 months old and when we take him out in the morning he seems to hyperventilate and breathe in really heavy like he is gasping for air for about a minute and then it stops and he is fine it seems. This seems to only happen in the morning.. other than this he is a perfectly healthy dog. Its pretty scary. Anyone know what this is or does anyone else have a similar experience with their Corgi? Any help is appreciated, I am a a bit worried.Thanks

Both of our corgi's have done that. It's a reverse sneeze. Its exact cause isn't known but it has to do with sinus irritation. It can be scary. We just pinch the end of their nose to close the nostril for a couple seconds and it goes away. Does it sound like this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXDledRQ7y4

yes it sounds like that!.. not so much the loud snorting type noise, but more of the heavy breathing part.. that dog looks distressed like Cory does when it happens... is this something that can be a problem? Never had a dog do this before.. thanks for your help!

Our Pembroke did it when he would pull on the leash too hard and our cardigan does it when you are playing with him and he is on his back. We have never had any problems because of it and our vet said it's normal. It is just scary and some times it last longer than others. We either pinch the nose shut or rub the throat or both and it goes away.

I think if you can get him to swallow it will stop. Do like Willette suggested and rub his throat/gently hold his nose. I've heard a squirt of water can work too.

thank you all so much much for the reassurance and information.. next time he "reverse sneezes" i will try tactics as suggested.. will still contact vet to let him know but at least i can sleep easier knowing it isnt life or death! thanks again

I think it's harmless, fuggedaboudit. It's like when you have snot in your nose, you either blow it out our snort it back in.

Really? It always sounds to me like when you get a popcorn hull stuck on your tonsil. "HRNNNNRK! HRRORK HRRORK HRRORK!"
Come to think of it I react in about the same way, by running in circles and throwing myself into objects until someone holds me down, pinches my nose, and rubs my throat.

Just a reverse sneeze. It scared me to death, first time I heard it. I just gently stroke his throat and that usually stops it.

Noodles went through a one year spell that he did the reverse sneezing almost every couple of months. It scared us to death and some of the episodes lasted longer than others. The ones that lasted a while, he would lose all strength in his legs and collapse and the look on his face was just awful. You would think he was dying. The poor guy didn't know what was going on. I always talk to him in a (hopefully) soothing tone and I cover his nose. I've tried rubbing his throat, but that doesn't seem to stop it. Covering his nose seems to work the best because it forces him to open his mouth and breathe that way. He actually just recently had a reverse sneeze when we went to the beach for the weekend. It was strange because he hadn't done that in a while. I talked with his vet and they asked me to keep record of it, but it wasn't anything to really worry about.

My girl Didi has these a lot, especially when the pollen is up. Holding her helps her from running around and freaking out, and I do what the others said. Clothe the nose and gently rub the throat. If she does it several times in a day I'll give her some benedryl (dosage as advised by the vet!)
