It is very dry in Arizona and we are at the end of our summer, final it is going to be below 80 today but next week back to the 90's :( oh well.  So Quin has cracks in her front paw pads and she is licking them.  The aren't bleeding but they bother her.  We walk about 3 miles a day in dirt and rock mostly dust and rock.  I am just wondering if anybody has had this problem or if it is a problem,  should I be worried about this or do dogs just get cracked paws?

Have you ever tried something like musher's wax? Maybe it would help her feet a bit.

'Mushers' Secret'?  Chapstick?

My vet told me that anything I put on her feet that would soften it will make it worse.  That it is just a fact of life here in AZ.  He did tell me to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt get worse or that she doesnt get something in it

Hi Kari, Musher's secret is wax, it does not soften the skin, it forms a layer to protect the skin. They have a lot of customers in AZ and CA, it's not only designed for snowy, icy, wet, salty, hard, pavement.

I wouldn't put anything on the paws. Products for mushers were developed for snow and ice conditions, not even close to AZ... can you ask breeders in your area, even if it's other breeds? In the meantime, 3 miles under those conditions risk making it worse. It may not be the dry conditions, but rather the rocks.  Can you walk the dog elsewhere, even sidewalks would do, and see if that helps?  My guess is it will take several months to repair cracked paws, but it just may work to stay off rocky terrain (even small rocks can have a cutting effect). Another alternative would be booties, but that can get expensive in  the long run....
