DAY CARE?!?!
Ok so I've had Coop now for almost a year and his shyness hasnt gotten any better. He's still afraid of literally everything and he's attached himself to my hip at all times. In my surrounding area there is a kennel that offers doggie day care. I've taken training classes at this place and found them quite wonderful. So does anyone think that getting him away from me and allowing him to socialize with other dogs will help?

Dear Krystal: I went to a very good obedience class and we actually did separation exercises. It may start out at one minute at a time (you do need a familiar partner) but my experience is that it is something that can be worked on. Cooper may really enjoy monitored socialization with others dogs, too. I hope that as he matures and your life together continues to broaden, he will be fine. All the best, Nancy

Kiwi has been going to daycare since she was about 9 weeks old, and I really think that this has helped her develop socially. Our daycare has the option to do a full day or a half day, so maybe you could start out with a couple of hours, where he goes out to play time and has a couple walks, and then you could go pick him up. *Side note: I try to find out what time they do playtime, so that if she's going to go for a half day, I know around what time I should drop her off and pick her up.* I think it might really help him, as long as everything is treated as a positive experience. Separation anxiety is difficult, but definitely fixable. After doing daycare, you could work on bringing him to a dog park or any kind of monitored playtime. I would work first and lots of environmental exposure while he is with you. Slowly get him used to the activities of other dogs and people. A fearful dog is likely to be a defensive dog and will not fair well in a multi dog situation. You may do well to continue training classes and find a friend or two that has confident and friendly dogs to walk with. Fearful dogs often take quite a long time to feel comfortable in the company of others.

I agree with this. I work at a doggy daycare here, and dogs who go there need to already be social (or young and impressionable), or they have a miserable time. We get in a few fearful dogs who just cower in the corner the entire time and it's really sad. :(
