Anyone have any advice on dealing with giardia? Abby has it for the 2nd time this summer - or maybe its still the first; she was treated and symptoms went away for 6 weeks, but the vet never suggested retesting her stool. The land next to us was a beaver pond many years ago, and is still boggy, and she got out into it Memorial weekend. We now have our yard fenced to avoid that. But we stopped bleaching where we cleaned up the poop after we thought it was done, so there could be contaminated spots all over the yard - and we are getting a new puppy in a week! She's now on a double dose of the metronidazole for 7 days, and the same dose of Panacur as before, but for 14 days instead of 7. Her stool will be tested again Saturday, and again after meds all done.  We have steamed cleaned and bleached all floors, shampooed the carpets, washed all bedding, toys, blankets, etc in hot water. Even sprayed the entire yard with a bleach solution. Is there anything else we can do?

It may be something your corgi is picking up off the ground with her mouth (not related to her own fecal contamination of the area).  Perhaps some other animal (rabbit?) left droppings in the yard that she picked up and ate.  I suggest combing the yard for signs of these droppings, just to make sure.  I know from experience that corgis will try eating almost anything.

No kidding on the almost anything...we call her "the goat." Her original exposure clearly was the bog, significant symptoms hit one week later. Bunny poop is primo treats, that's part of the reason we fenced, to keep the bunnies and the turkeys out (we hope!). Didn't keep out the woodchuck tho, he managed to get in under the fence, but its now lined with rocks. And he came in on the bog side of the yard, so he may have just tracked it in on his feet. Between the rocks and the Havahart trap, maybe we'll take care of him.
Also be sure to watch for places that she may be drinking from (puddles, rivers, ponds, etc) as they can also harbor giardia. We had to treat Finn for it a month or so ago, it's always good to do a follow up fecal after treatment to make sure it worked accordingly.

I keep her out of puddles and stuff, but she did go swimming a couple weeks ago - but we went with friends & their dogs, and none of the other dogs got it. We will definitely have a follow-up done, more than one, a couple weeks apart, and then just be vigilant I guess. Still worried about the new puppy coming in, I hope he doesn't get it!

Giardia often is not eradicated with one dose, the drug only kills one stage of the life cycle, so anything younger may hang out in her system and bloom again in a few weeks to a month or so (I speak from personal experience having had it myself!). You've cleaned as thoroughly as you can, which is the best you can do. In the man vs microbes battle, the microbes tend to win, sadly. Do test the poops again, to be sure the second round of the drug was enough.
