Dog attack
On Monday evening, my sweet Cody was charged and attacked by a Rottweiler/mix while on his leash. The Rottie picked him up and shook him...this happened twice before I could get him off Cody. The boys walking the dog were no match for the dog's strength. It was AWFUL. Cody was flipping around and screaming in pain as though he'd been hit by a car. I was devastated. After having him checked out, and a night of upset and tears, we knew he was alright. Back to normal by morning, but I was traumatized. The Rottweiler/mix was a brand new adoptee from the local shelter. He was 100+ lbs. and stood tall. The lady that owned him called the next morning and said that they were taking him back....seems he'd growled in the face of their 5-year-old son that next morning. They hadn't even had him 24 hrs. Lesson: Be sure to do all your homework before getting ANY dog....especially a rescue. Know it's history (hopefully the previous owners were honest with the shelter), and be sure to get a dog you and your kids can handle. Also, on my end. I will consider carrying pepper spray in case of future attacks. It was not an experience I want to re-live.

So glad Cody is ok and so sorry you had to experience this! We had a close call with a similarly large dog walked by a girl who weighed less than the dog, but thankfully we were able to divert the charge before he reached us. Little kids should not be walking big dogs!
Sounds like the poor woman who adopted him had a bad experience too. It can be tough to tell what you are getting because many dogs "shut down" in a shelter situation and seem much more mellow than they really are.
What a scary experience. I know it's tough but do try to get Cody right back out to meet friendly big dogs so he doesn't get dog-aggressive himself as a result of the scare.

You are right, Beth. The poor family was shaken, and they were so apologetic. The dog was way too big for their young boys, and it was 2 years old. It had been brought to the shelter by someone that claimed they could no longer care for it, BUT...they also had claimed he was good with other dogs and kids! I checked and the shelter re-listed him as "needs to be only dog" and "growled at little boy who adopted me first." At least they're being honest. Hopefully he can find a good home. Cody has been on 5 walks since the incident and he is just fine :) No fears or agression. Very thankful it turned out alright.

Oh my goodness, just checked your profile and is he only 3 months old? If so, triple scary and even more important to get him back out around plenty of friendly dogs to help him (and you) move past the experience. Remember too that puppies scream when adult dogs are rough or frighten them so if he wasn't badly hurt he may have been more scared/submitting than anything.

Yes, he was definitely scared. He lost control of his bowels too, and had 4 bumps on his sides from the dog's teeth. No blood drawn. His back was covered in saliva. We bathed him after having him checked, and I slept on the floor all night with him. He was fine, I cried. Hope this never happens again! He is 14 weeks old today!

its sad the same thing happened to me with my weim- the dog pulled out of the owners hands & ran over to attack it did not last long- I said to the woman does that happen often & she said the same thing it was her first time tasking him out after rescue... mmmmm I have the spray ready on my leash for dog or wild animal:)))

I am so glad to hear that Cody is alright. I would recommend that you carry a baseball bat instead of pepper spray. You can aim a bat much better and you wont run out of bat.The family was shaken???? Only because they got caught.

Yeah, my husband said to carry a bat too! Ha ha....honestly, the lady was very upset. They felt terrible and she called me that night and again the next day. They learned a tough lesson too....don't get a dog bigger and stronger than your kids...especially if it may have a past!!!! They didn't even have him 24 hrs. and he was returned. They are waiting on a smaller dog to come in that has a good disposition and a better history (hopefully an accurate history at that!). Thanks, Steve

Think about it Steve, this dog growled at their child also. I would guess, yes, they are shaken. I'm glad they returned the dog and owned up to the problem. A puppy getting attacked is terrible, a child getting attacked is much worse.

Returning the dog is not solving the problem. The dog still has the problem. Help the dog and let someone who can handle the dog do so not kids

Glad to head your boy is OK, follow Beth's wonderful advice :) If the dog doesn't find a "good home", maybe the shelter should reconsider their behavior testing techniques. Dog and human aggressive in any case would be a sentence in my world. Sorry to those of you who hate to hear it, but it is the truth. Rotties aren't suppose to be that way at all, it's a sign of either poor breeding or poor raising. Or both.
At any rate, Kathleen, glad Cody is ok!
