Do any of you have experience with electric dog fences, either wireless or underground?  Pros / cons / recommendations on which brand/model to get?

I'm moving to a place with 10+ acres, so I want to keep my dog confined to a certain area.

Thanks!

I've used one. It works almost all the time. The batteries on the collars can run down, they don't get the warning beep, so they know they can cross the line. A particularly determined dog can break the line if he really wants to.  You also need to remove the collars during thunderstorms so the dogs don't get shocked in case of a ground lightning strike. But for the most part I was happy with it.

We trained the dogs ourselves, installed the "fence" ourselves. Much cheaper that way.

My big question for you is, can the fence cover 10+ acres?

Good morning David!

I have no personal experience with electric fences; however, my concern would be this.......the electric fence cannot keep other dogs &/or wildlife out.

Have a great day!

We have used the radio fencing in two different houses with four different dogs.  Please follow the training instructions.  It seem silly and repetitive but it works.  Keep the flags so you can use them in case someone needs reminding.  We have been using the Petsafe brand (purchased at Home Depot).  You will need to keep up on the battery in the collars as they do need to be replaced.  Have back-ups on hand so the dog doesn't get a chance to figure it out.  We have two sets of collars for each of our dogs.  The radio-fence collar with ID tag, just in case they get loose.  Also we have going out collars (with rabies and ID tags) since you should not walk the dogs while wearing the shock-collar.  You never know who else around you has a radio fence too.  We think it is a great solution to keeping your property open while keeping the dogs in.

The one downside, IT DOESN'T KEEP OTHER DOGS OUT!

We have one. Sophie only got close the first day. Now we don't even put the collar on her anymore. I've found they don't serve the full requirement of a fenced in yard. We have foxes, coyotes and neighborhood dogs that visit our yard often. We also would like to let her out in the yard if we are busy inside and can't be attentive. I can't do that with an invisible fence.

I am just reminded of one of the sick little pleasures I get with having the radio fence. I do love to let the dogs barking, running dogs out and scare the crap out workers in our neighbor's yards.  Is that wrong?
