Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to know how much exercise you give your dog? Right now, I give my puppy a 30 min walk and play with him on and off for most of the day during the weekends, and on evenings during the weekday. But I am worried that is not enough. Just wondering to know everyone else's schedule so I can compare. Also, if you have any good exercise ideas, I will be glad to hear it.

Also, my corgi is a massive chewer. I give him a big raw-hide bone during the day when he is in his crate so it gives him something to do. However, I heard bones are very bad for dogs. What  do you guys think?

Hi Lita, We go for 3 walks per day everyday, first thing in the morning, first thing after work (after 5) and before bed. at least 30 mins each.

A tired corgi is a great corgi, remember they are herding dogs and require mental and physical stimulation daily, if not, they will pursue other careers like carpentry - chewing things they're not supposed to.

Raw-hide bone especially the compressed ones are no no in my house, we had bad experience with them, where the little piece broke and expanded in Mocha's stomach, causing obstruction, bloody stool, constipation and diarrhea. Do not give them raw-hide when you cannot supervise or keep an eye on them.

You can also consider other options like antler chews, pig ears or my dog's favorite - bone marrow bones.
We have also had a bad experience with rawhides. I don't know if he ate too much of one or if the pieces were too big or what but it caused uncontrollable bloody diarrhea. It was awful for us and for Finn. Since then he is only allowed to chew a rawhide if we are watching him and I take it away about halfway through depending on how quickly he's chewing it up. We get the large rolled rawhides because he doesn't get through them as fast and doesn't seem to get large pieces off. For the rest of the time when he needs something to chew he gets a Nylabone.
I'm wondering about my Lilli, also. I am somewhat disabled, having broken my back a few years ago. I cannot walk fast enough with the Corgi on a leash to provide her sufficient exercise, I think. So in good weather we visit an off-leash park every other day for about an hour and a half, and she has a fenced yard at home. But in recent weeks all the snow has iced over to the point that the trails are like skating rinks, or solid mine-fields. My older dog can't handle it, and I shouldn't.

So Lilli stays home with us, and she is fine! She seems to adjust to the needs or activity level of her family. She is 3 yrs. old, 19 lbs., and runs like mad at the park. We give her a rawhide bone every night. She insists on playing fetch in the house with her favorite toy every day. I am surprised that she copes so well with limited activity. That seems kind of hound-like.

Does anyone else's Corgi do this? Adjust their need for activity/excercise to the activity that is offered?

Julia
How old is your puppy? Until mine were 6 months old, our routines were similar to yours. As they get older, I would gradually extend our walking time. They will let you know if they have enough: running in circles in the house after a walk--not enough. Plopping down on their side or falling asleep right after they get home - enough.

my vet recommends granuated raw-hides. Less chance of choking...They don't occupy my dogs for very long though.
My puppy is 5 months old. I thought that puppies had more energy, so I thought I needed to exercise him more. Thank you so much for the advice!
Our dogs NEVER tire of playing soccer. A water polo ball is perfect (lighter). Current favorite is a child's 7" basketball, fast, lively, toothproof. But you might avoid rough games like this -- fast turning and stopping -- until 1 y.o. or more. You do NOT want a growth plate injury:
achondroplasia
that's Joanna Kimball's blog.
Our breeder was quite firm: no long hikes or big challenges until 1 y.o.. especially no leaping down from heights.
Once adult, walk long, often, and fast. you can't outwalk a corgi.
Al has learned to herd the ball around the playground in endless circles. he doesn't need me anymore.
Thanks for all those recommendations! But looks like I have to wait, since he is 5 months old. Also thanks for the blog recommendation. I will keep this bookmarked.
