I'm thinking of giving Sidney some fish oil caplets to help his skin/coat. I can get a good deal on human-grade caplets; they are 1000mg. Is this too much, or should they be fine?
Should be absolutely fine. Grissom gets one tablet with each meal, two meals a day, to maintain healthy skin and coat.
Keep in mind that if his coat is currently in poor condition, double the dose to get the coat in tip top shape, then bring it down to recommended dosage to maintain the coat.
I always squeeze out the contents into the food and give him the shell as well.
Dog's digestion is so fast that there's a chance a whole capsule might not dissolve completely and just pass through.
Shiro's been getting fish oil for about 10 days now and I haven't noticed any difference in his coat yet. He's running around like crazy though and needs a lot more exercise.
Right now i've got my 5 dogs on 3V Caps which are fish oil and Vitamins A & E also. They are 670mg capsules. The bottle says give 1-2 capsules daily for dogs under 30bs. Hope this helps!
Stanley's skin gets a bit itchy too. I have heard good things about the fish oil. But I do have a question and forgive me if it's a dumb one, but does giving them fish oil affect their breath? Because I know some humans who take fish oil and have some really bad smelling breath. Will Stanley get stinky fish breath??
I haven't noticed change in Shiro's breath smell. It stinks a bit after a meal (no matter if there's fish oil in it), but that's about it.
I've never heard of this problem in people though. I guess if you take it in caplets and brush your teeth 2-x a day it will be fine.
Brushing your teeth doesn't work. My boyfriend had started taking fish oil pills a while back and his breath was terrible when he was on them. And he brushed and gargled with mouthwash of course. It was so bad, I had to tell him to stop taking them. And as soon as he did, his breath improved 100%. And I had a co-worker on fish oil pills whose breath was so bad, you couldn't even hold a conversation with him. So that's where my concern comes in. I suppose it could be the brand of pills or something or maybe it takes your body a while to adjust...IDK....
wow I had no idea. I take gel caplets and if I stank my fiance would definitely let me know. Although I break them for Shiro and he's OK. Maybe it is the brand. I use something extremely cheap from Aldi brand. I think Welby? Not sure.
I tried taking fish oil capsules, but I hated the "aftertaste" I'd get if I would burp. Bleah! I switched to flaxseed oil, which was much better. Just a suggestion for you humans :)
I'm going to get the fish oil capsules today. I'll let you know in a few days about whether or not Sid's breath starts to smell fishy.
We bought the fish oil capsules. Sidney did not care for the texture of the gels, though.I took Linsey's idea and squeezed the contents over his food. He loooves it! He licks the dish and will even eat more kibble than usual if it has that delightful fishy stuff all over it. The only downside is that after feeding him, my fingers stink of fish x_x
