ok so the past few posts i was wondering what i could do to make teddy more relaxed around other dogs and i appreciate all the advice i was given. it turns out just like a few people have said i was part of the problem being nervous. well knowing if i was going to be nervous all the time i couldnt train teddy as it was my fault and its impossible for my husband to to so, i calmed my nerves as we went into puppy play time at petco on Saturday last week and this week so he has he had 4play times and here is the update on it:)
the frist day we went there he saw the pups and was curious and said hello to this shitzu named puffer fish (lol) he was calm so teddy and him became friends. then more arrived. an Akita puppy who was a bully. a rotti pup,a silky terrier and a German Shepperd. teddy sat back in the pen next to us for a while and watched as the other dogs played. they all went up to say hello and he got scared and ran away but after a few attempts he let them sniff him. we all were giving out treats and was having fun walking around knowing if he went up to another dog he got a treat. thats it for the frist day.
the 2nd day him and puffer laid together at first as we were the only ones there. then 5more pups arrived and they were big dogs which is what teddy is afraid of. he hid under the chairs but after convincing he came out and tried to play with a jack russel and a collie mix. he walked around not minding if the dogs came up to him to say hello at all which is a first. when all the bigger dogs were gone he was walking around and trying to play with the smaller dogs up until it was time to leave.
this Saturday i see the big difference. he went into the pen with no hesitation and actually played with a chow mix puppy! he was having a great time. then more pups came in and then he just sat back and watched them play. he tried to join in with a sheltie and the collie mix but i guess he decided it was to much for him lol.
yesterday there wasnt that many dogs but the trainer was there and had her giant German shepherd. teddy didnt want to go into the pen at frist but after a few treats he did. the shepherd was very gentle and teddy was no longer scared. teddy seemed a little tired so he just kinda hung back yesterday but he did try to play with the others but they were to big for him:)
during all of this i would click and treat for good behvior and correct if he growled or anything. he has come a long way from being "i dont want anything to do with other dogs" to "hmm, there not so bad"
i have come the conclusion, if its a female he automatically likes them. if its small same thing but if the dog is hyper, big or small, he hates them.
just the other day i went into petco just to get some food. i seen some dogs and teddy didnt growl or anything he just looked ad kept walking.
another thing i must add, the head collar really has helped in all of this. this thing is amazing!
