He just had an occult heartworm test back in April. I'll give them a call and see what they say. I was taking some pics of him in the back yard under a big maple tree and didn't see it at the time as he was about 20 feet away. I checked the images in the LCD screen on the camera, blew it up to check sharpness and I counted 12 mosquitoes on him!! Some on his ears, muzzle and feet. That's when I panicked and thought of that possible dose I had missed.

If you give the medication 30 days from exposure, you should be fine. It is not a preventive, it actually works by killing the larval forms in the bloodstream when they are already there ( preventing further development which takes time ) Just don't miss any more doses!

no as long as you have been continually giving the medication after that. The medication works by killing everything he was exposed to within 45 days prior to when you give the pill. So basically you have a two week grace period to give the pill. Just make sure to do a heartworm test in about 6 months or so just to make sure. Heartworm takes 6 months to develop from larva to adult so at this point there isn't really anyway of knowing if he contracted it or not. So make sure to do your annual heartworm test and continue giving the medications

I don't think I did miss but I just wasn't 100% sure about it. That's the first time I've not been sure of giving him his meds. Either way, I'm taking him in next month for a yearly physical and may as well have that test ran to be safe.
I see neighbor's dogs that are outside 80% of the time and have saw them upclose as I give them treats through the fence and I can see long, curled under nails and wonder if they get any meds at all. You neglect that area, neglect grooming, baths, teeth brushing etc., in all liklihood everything else is neglected as well.

No point in running the test just yet. It takes 6 months to show up so the test will be negative. Just plan to do the test in about 6 months, or a year from the last time you had it done. All this talk of missing the heartworm medication and I can't remember if I gave Franklin his for August! Lol. It was such a busy month and I was gone for most of it so I can't remember either!

I live in an area where heartworm is not common. However when I travelled to Florida, my vet suggested to just give a dose of interceptor once 30 days after we returned from the trip. He claimed that would kill anything he was exposed to during the prior month.

This has been a very hot summer here with temps in the 90's for over a month. The humidity is low now and it hasn't rained in a good two weeks but when it's humid, these things come out of the woodwork. Even if I hadn't missed a dose, I don't want 8-12 mosquitoes on him as I saw that early evening. They haven't been very prominent with all the dry weather and heat.
