Hi my Katie and I jsut got back from the dog park, and I am worried sick! She was the only dog there that wouldnt play or run. I walked her down to the lake (only to find labs and retrievers) and back which was about a 1/4 mi walk and she was beat.

She wouldnt let any other dog get near her hip area. she would snap at them. She does have a waddle when she walks, has had it since she was a baby, only lately its been a much wider waddle. I have noticed last couple of months, she has missed her step a few times, and has tripped, or jsut then decided to sit in the same place she missed that step.

I thought it was because of lack of excercise but lately I have been taking her on walks. At 1st, it was only around the block, and then 2 blocks, ect. only when the weather is cool enough, she hates the heat.

I keep her nails nice and trim, cause I thought it might be that, but it isnt.

I've read some of the posts about hip displaysia, and all who owned dogs with it talked about a popping sound, and I dont hear anything.

She does sway her rear area when standing, like she is unsteady. she still wants to jump on the couch but I put a stop to her jumping down, I carry her down, every since a woman at work had her min pin almost paralyzed jumping off the bed..

Last winter she did have an incident where she jumped off the couch and was acting hurt for about 5 mins, but then she seemed ok.

She has always swayed in her step or stance, even as a puppy, I thought that was normal because of having such a long body. Her front legs are very strong and even when she stands, but her back legs do sway and seem unsteady.

Katie is the runt of the little, she is much smaller than other corgis, and boy did I see that today and the corgi meetup!

Anyone else with a similar problem? any help on Corgi health issues with symtomps like this?

I hear hip displaysia just gets worse over the years, and I want Katie to live a long and healthy, and happy life. she seems bothered by this and sleeps most of the day in my room on her pillow.

Help!

Pat

thank you Carol, I may not be able to afford a Neuro, thats why my vet is trying to work on this for me. Being a single mom, its tough. I do know that she will need another xtray soon of her neck, then he will have her full body. She is playing more now, and I took her for a short walk yesterday, and she pulled me most of the way.
I also was told by a friend and breeder, who knows the breeder that Katie came from and there is no history of this in the line, and Katie may jsut be woobly like this all her life for no reason other than being just a corgi. She is the runt of the litter and much smaller than most corgis. Also wanted to add that she doesnt seem to be in any kind of pain.
Katie does have a play date tomorrow morning. I am trying to get her to be more social.
thanks again will post updates as I can
I heard from one member of the group, who said that an MRI was needed to diagnose DM (also needed for the IVDD that Lucky has) unfortunately, not just any vet can do an MRI, and they are expensive!! No one has replied on the wobblers, I have never heard of it. Will the vet school offer anything at a discount??? i know it is terriblly expensive - we could only "afford" Lucky's surgery because we had just sold our house, and that was with 2 of us working! We had just lost our other corgi after a longterm illness, I don't know what I would have done if I had lost 2 in 6 weeks. Good Luck, I wish you the best! Will keep you informed of anything i hear from the other group.
MRI cannot diagnose DM. It's a disease that, at this point, cannot be diagnosed except after death by examining the spinal cord under a microscope.

DM is not the only disease that causes corgi paralysis; it's not even the only disease that causes its exact symptoms. And it can ONLY be diagnosed at necropsy.

The reason her vet is saying it's almost certainly not DM is that DM is an old-age disease. It's the consequence of "junk" building up around the spinal nerves throughout life, so it would be incredibly rare for a young dog of any breed to have it.

Wobblers is the result of the bones of the spine pressing on the spinal cord; it describes a bunch of different syndromes with the same symptoms. Some types the dog can live with; others are progressive and eventually fatal. Exactly what is going on usually requires a neurologist but they may be able to do it with x-rays. MRI or a myelogram are so expensive that most of the time owners just have to work with whatever diagnosis the neurologist can make using normal tools.

Pat, if there is ANY way to get your vet to do a tick panel, DO IT. Lyme, anaplasmosis, ehrlichia, and Rocky Mountain are epidemic all over the country and city dogs are getting them in droves. A tick panel is by far the cheapest tool for diagnosis and the treatment is inexpensive as well. MUCH better to rule it out immediately than take the chance that you're missing such a simple solution.
THanks you guys, I will do the test for Lyme. Woke up this morning and Katie was throwing up again. I had started her on glucosomine yesterday, I am wondering if this is it. she had eaten normal and played yesterday, but did slow down last night I thought she ws tired. I had given her a pill the vet had given me, Centrine. It also could have been something she ate. But she had been throwing up a few times her and there in the last few weeks. I had switched her food to an organic less filler food about 3 weeks ago, and thats seems to be when she started vomiting occaisionly. Its called Natures logic and its very expensive. I am trying to pinpoint the specific reason for this vomiting since shes never done it since she was a pup, and it could be the food, or she got into something, or todays incidence could be the glucosomine.
I went to the local pet supply yesterday and I think I am going to switch her over to the Diamond call of the wild, I thinks thats the name, it came highly recommended from the staff. Also less filler. For her first 3 1.2 years of life with me she was on Nutro ultra and she did fine but its very hard to find and the only local store that sells it is usually out when i get there. I was told the call of wild is actually less filler than the nutro ultra.
Well after Katie was finished vomiting, she looked less sick and drank alot of water, and even wanted to eat, so I gave her a small amount of her kibble, and she seems to be keeping it down, she even wanted to play a little with her fav toy but I stopped it until her stomach settles. Will give her another small amount in a couple hours. She also had an accident in the house last night but it wasnt diarrhea. Now I'm thinking she ate something.
What are your thoughts on the Diamond call of the wild food?
Did she throw up kibble? Or did she throw up yellow bile and foam? Vomiting bile is very common and it's just that her stomach got empty and was still producing acid, so she did the sensible thing and got rid of it. You can usually stop it almost instantly by just giving a bit of food when you know her stomach is empty. The better kibbles move through their system faster, so they spend more time with an empty tummy and can urp up a little more. It's not dangerous.

All dry food has "filler" material; it has to. Dried meat doesn't stick together in a little crunchy thing on its own, and an all-meat kibble would be ruinously expensive (you can tell because the few true all-meat diets, usually freeze-dried, ARE incredibly expensive). Natures Logic has millet; TOTW has potato. Neither is anything a dog needs, but it allows the kibble to keep its shape as it is extruded. Some dogs have a very hard time with potato; others do beautifully on it.

I feed raw, and among the grain-free kibbles my top choice is Orijen, but you have to see what works well for your dog and keeps them healthy.
thanks Joanna, She threw up because of the glucosomine I started her on Saturday. I gave it to her by mistake on an empty stomach. I read the fine print and they said it could cause gastro upset and thats what it did. Now she gets is during her meal.
Katie can stomach alot, when she did get sick, at first it came out lqiudy food then bile. the pill I gave her turned her right around and then she was fine. but she has had a few bouts since i put her on Natures logic. I am going to switch.
