Hello All,

Wyatt has begun taking frequent walks now that he's fully protected with vaccinations. We began the walk routine about two weeks ago, and we average about two walks per day, 20-40 min. each. Is that too long for a developing pup? I want to insure he gets plenty of exercise, but I also want to protect his growing bones. At the end of his second walk, he usually plops down in front of the elevator of our apartment lobby and he either needs to be carried or dragged into the elevator--it's pretty comical actually. Otherwise, he keeps up with me on our walks and is gradually getting better and better and following me on a lead. Mind you, he does get a fair amount of exercise in the apartment chasing toys and fetching his frisbee. Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated! I'm a first time Corgi mom and I worry about everything. :)

I wouldn't go more than a mile at that age. If he is showing obvious signs of fatigue I think I would make them a little shorter

Hi Chelsea and Dan, make sure you stop for water breaks every 15 mins, carry a water bottle with you. Walking is fine as long as you gradually increase distance and time, the growth plate concerns are related to jumping down, not walking.

Our breeder, knowing I'm a hiker, was quite firm:  "No big physical challenges until 1 year old".   Meaning, presumably, no Death Marches.  But I think the main thing is jumping down from heights (growth plate injury), so I'd try to limit that.

If you have hard, smooth floors, try to provide nonskid throw-rugs or some such soft nonskid surface at takeoff and landing zones.  Try to discourage the habit of leaping off the bed -- provide steps and train in their use.
