I hope it isnt Fleas!
So today Lance went to the groomers, (new one) when he came home I was checking his paw pads to see if they did a good job and something made me check under his legs in the
hidden area and to my surprise I found a bunch of blackish brown looking things that I need to pull off because they just did
not fall off. It looked brownish black not really sure though.
I was baffled why the groomer didnt say something after all you
think if she groomed him she would have saw that. I didnt see
anything jumping, like live fleas, what could it be? Do you think
it was dead fleas or flea eggs? Is it possible everything was dead because we use flea preventative to begin with? I was hoping that I would never have to deal with this. Where is the most common place to find fleas?
Any adice or help with this would be wonderful as I have never had to deal with this before.

Hi Natalie, the blackish brown stuff are scabs from open wound, it could have been fleas that took several bites, itches and caused Lance to chew that area a bit. There are several areas that fleas tend to gather, the inside of the leg, neck and right above the tushies. Even if you are on flea preventative meds, fleas can still invade Lance, the only thing that have been 100% successful in killing the fleas within 30 mins is "capstar". You can talk to your vet about it if things are really out of hand.
Fleas tend to be in tall grassy area, also from cats and other animals.

Thanks Sam! I havent found any live fleas on him would I still have to use capstar?

In my opinion, if he's not scratching or chewing himself excessively, I would not use capstar, I belief capstar should be used as a very last resort. See my previous threads on getting rid of fleas. Message me directly if you still have more questions :)

You can usually tell if it's a flea. I'm always wary of them and i check every little dark spot on my dog. It ends up being lint or some sort of dirt speck she managed to pick up outside. if you have flea preventative, any fleas that do end up on your dog will either jump off or die. Just keep up with the preventative and you should be fine.

Yes that has happened to me in the past when I thought I saw a flea on Lance and it was just some lint but this time was different, there were a whole bunch of brownish/black specks on the inside of his leg and I had to literally pick them all off as they would not just fall off. Unfortunately I noticed this after I got back from the new groomers we went to today. Lance has alot of white on him so it is alot easier to tell if something isnt right. There was too much of it for it to be just fuzz or something and it was both legs. : ( Thanks for your advice, I am going to the vets tomm. to pick up more of his flea preventative.

my gf and i had a daily process of checking her fur for fleas. we had a cotton swab or qtip with some alcohol on it to dab on them when we'd see them...it slows them down a lot. Those pesky things will burrow deep into the fur so you can't get them. We would then get them and drop them in a cup of water with some dishwasher soap fluid in it. This helped a lot. Get ready for a ton of vacuuming! when giving them a bath, lather the collar area first to stop them from going to face to get away from the water.

Update: Just got back from the vets office and they ran a flea comb through Lance and didnt find any fleas!
We picked up his frontline and will put it on tomm. since he was just groomed. Keep your fingers crossed

I've seen the scabs on my Truffle, near lower tummy area inside the legs but the Vet convinced us, they are due to sensitive skin problem and not fleas. Like you, I didn't see any jumping things. For sometime, I comb her everyday with a flea comb to check and found nothing although the scabs keep on appearing.

We had some similar skin issues with our corgi, on his belly. We took him to the vet and she said it was probably a skin allergy and gave us some antibiotic. It eventually went away on its own, but Vash did chew intermintently at the scabs for awhile. We'd make him stop and distract him with toys.
