Hi everyone,

I had posted a week ago about Malygos, and she's doing wonderfully! Unfortunately I'm being forced to go to my sister's graduation in New York from Wednesday - Saturday morning, and I can't bring Malygos with me. I'm having her boarded at the vet (since she's so young, 10 weeks, I don't trust anyone else..) I'm worried that she's going to forget me in those four days, or that this will be a really traumatic experience and that she'll dislike me for the rest of her life. Am I being ridiculous? I've had her for a week now, and I've literally been with her 24/7. She comes with me everywhere in the house, and if I have to leave I stick her in my purse and only go to places I know that there haven't been other dogs. I've been wearing an old t-shirt for the past two days that I'm going to leave with her in the kennel, but I'm still worried she's going to forget me in those three days?

Hi Autumn, that is unfortunate indeed, you're doing the right thing with leaving your old T-shirt, while you're away on your sister's graduation, prepare a list of things you'll do to make it up to Malygos :)

Can she go back to her breeder? I'd be very concerned about a partially vaccinated 10 week old staying at a vet's office.

We do the best with what we have. She won't forget you, but you will be back to square one (or probably before) with getting her used to your schedule, sleeping arrangements, etc.
By "back to the breeder" I mean just for the few days while you are gone, of course! That would be the ideal solution.

I wish I could do that but I got her from Texas and I live in Maryland.

I don't mind going back to square one with the schedule, she wasn't too hard to crate train, she sleeps straight from 11-7:30! I just was worried she would forget that I'm mommy. (I know that's silly)

The vet promised to take care of her, and I left her with the food I give her, a special toy, and a shirt. I know there's not much that can be helped, I'm just worried about her!

It sounds like you already left her, at which point worrying makes no more sense.  Enjoy your sister's graduation to the fullest and dedicate the next 12 yrs to Malygos....she'll probably be the darling of all the Vet Techs.

I would echo Beth's suggestion of taking her back to her breeder. Most breeders are more than happy to do this for you in a situation like this. Even leaving her with her breeder, you will probably be back to square one with training. She won't forget YOU, she'll just forget what you want from her. :(

Even my little Kadi (9 months now) 'forgot' some of her potty training after boarding for a weekend at the vet.

She will weather this better than you. She will be just fine. You've done all you should do so quit worrying. Dogs live in the moment. She will be glad to see you when you get back. She's a baby and baby love everyone. Just get back on your schedule and she will be fine. In fact, it would be a good idea to start leaving her at home sometimes. She needs to get used to the idea that when you leave, you will come back. Put her in her crate and leave for short times then come back and let her out. Be sure she is not fussing when you let her out, that she is quiet and calm. No drama when you leave and no super excitement when you come back. Keep it cool and calm. There might be a time when you have to leave her and she needs to know you will come back to her.

Excellent advice from Karen.
