ears!

so i've read about a lot of different ways to tape ears. i've also even heard of gluing with i think fabric glue or something... it seems kind of odd and the glue seems hard to find so i'm not even going to bother with it. what method do you guys recommend? does anyone have a good how to website? i'm a visual learner so if anyone knows of a website with pictures with the steps or a good video perhaps? unless you guys can be really descriptive with your steps!

i've seen some websites say just to use masking tape alone, and i've seen others say to cut up toilet paper rolls and put it in their ears with the tape or something? i don't know, the whole thing confuses me. there are so many "methods" but which one is the most effective and, well, the right method? and none of these sites say how long i have to tape their ears! or how many times a day. how long do i leave this on during the day? do i have to untape and apply fresh tape after so many hours? do i tape at night? is it ok to leave him alone while his ears are taped like say when i go to work? how do i tell when his ears are ready to stay up on their own?

i'm thinking i will have more questions once people start giving answers, so try to read some of my comments if i post any because they'll most likely be questions!

my new baby is coming saturday and i want to have all the supplies ready! he's 16 weeks old this week and the breeder said his ears are "starting" to come back up. apparently they were up when he was much younger then they fell again and have been down for a while. i don't want to risk him having floppy ears. not that there's anything wrong with floppy eared corgis! i just want mine to be perfect and pointy-eared =)

Beth, if you choose to define "prick ears" as "up at the base" then why tape? Prick ears are all the way up and, if not, as the posted standard shows, it's a disqualification.  Breeders tape because they could not show or sell floppy eared corgis and taping, for the most part, works. If I sold you an adult  dog, sight unseen, told you he had prick ears and shipped you a dog whose ears were only up at the base, you'd have a thing or two to say to me and, I'm guessing that I could not appease you by  telling you your newly acquired corgi had genetically prick ears :-)

I'm having trouble replying to individual posts, but I will repeat that Corgis with down ears have genetically prick ears that for whatever reason have fallen; they are NOT genetically selected for down ears like, say, a Beagle.

Flop ears are a different set of genetics than prick ears. You don't get a drop ear by gradually selecting from longer and longer prick ears. If you look at a drop-ear dog, the ear set is different (more sideways than forward) and the BASE of the ear lies flat to the skull.

A Corgi with down ears (even a big-eared Cardi) had ears that are pricked at the base and face forward when held in neutral; the top creases, as Jane says.

The huge majority of Pems will come up on their own IF they have enough calcium and don't have fate working against them, but most people are not willing to take a chance on down eared pups coming up on their own and so they tape.

My Pem with the bigger ears has heavier ear leather and they had no problem coming up (though I did tape, as mentioned). Maddie has smaller ears but her skin is softer, her hair is softer, her ear leather is softer and apparently they were up and down for nearly an entire year before going up and staying up. So it's not just size.

Collies have a third type, that naturally is up at the base and tips forward at the edges.

Anyway, I will repeat that pups whose ears go up early tend to be pups with smaller ears AS PUPS; the adult size ear does not seem to be predicted as a puppy and I've seen huge-eared adults who started out as small-eared pups (who came up early and stayed up). I've seen normal-eared adults who had huge batwing ears as pups that tended to fall down. It is hard to select for how soon the ears grow; that must be a complex set of genetics + neo-natal development.

some pups we met on a road trip some taped some not

Yep, that's what I'd expect.  You've got what looks like 4 littermates there. Two don't need tape, one just has a bit of tape on the base, and one has the more elaborate crown.

soooooooooo let's just assume that my corgi is genetically supposed to have upright ears, but i just want to help his ears pop up a little sooner. as i did already mention, they used to be up, fell after a while, and are STARTING to come back up on their own (according to the breeder) i haven't seen him yet since she said they "started" coming back up, as i am getting him tomorrow. depending on what i see i will decide to tape, but i wanted to be prepared just incase. while i appreciate this heated debate, can we possibly get back on the original topic? =)

Sorry.  I would give him a few days to adjust, then if they are still down I'd tape.  Two passes of masking tape around the base of the ear, making sure there are no folds.   Leave it on for 2 days or until he scratches it off.  If they are up, let them go.  If they fall, tape again.
