As I am Ziggy's fourth owner, I haven't met his original owners. I don't know anything about his history. I would like to, but I don't really know how to go about doing this.
Aside from his overbite (which I am pretty sure isn't natural due to his messed up teeth and the gap in his nose) he seems to be a really beautiful Corgi. (I LOVE his overbite, but it's not the standard is what I mean haha.) Like he seems that he could very likely have come from a breeder. To Look.. Or not to Look?
The thing is.. Is I know that reputable breeders have contracts stating that if for any reason the dog or puppy is no longer wanted that the dog is to be returned to the breeder.
Well, I could probably get into contact with the original owner (Maybe.. I don't know if the information that's on his vet records and such is still current.) and find out if he did come from a breeder and where, etc. Or I could even go through the hassle of trying to locate and confirm the breeder with the original owner's name-though that would probably be a long shot.. But I was wondering.. Because of the contract, if I would be obligated to return Ziggy if I did? OR would the original owners get into trouble?
PS: I wasn't clear enough so here is another couple factors, taken from a comment below, but I assume not everyone reads the comments, so.. Yeah:P
A vet didn't give me their information, the original owners gave it to the second and the second to the third and then the third to me-more of a proof of health kinda thing, I believe. Also, they didn't give him up years ago, it hasn't been even a year since he was rehomed from them... Maybe about half a year now. The ad said, "Timmy was rescued from a couple who loved him very much but let his weight get out of control" so I don't think that they would be bitter, though they might be. I can see how the guilt would turn to anger.
The thing that I am most concerned about, is that when I contacted Avid to get his chip information switched to mine, they told me I needed to either mail in or fax over adoption papers, signing Ziggy over from them to me. I can't do that without contacting them, and I'm at a loss at what I could do other than contact them, or just risk him getting lost and either returned to him or just not returned at all and it being up to me and Craigslist and fliers, which could work, but if he did get scanned.. Well, I would be outta luck more likely than not.

Thanks for your comment:)
I don't really want to risk it though and others seem to think that it would be.. But no.
I do know that he has a microchip-but not from the breeder, it is from the original owner.
I haven't specifically looked for any tattoos or anything but I spend quite a bit of time playing with his ears and haven't noticed anything. Is it on the tip? Down further?
I think it would totally depend on the breeder. Personally, I would let it go. They don't know you so it's very possible they might try and take him back, especially if they find out he's been passed around to 4 different homes. I'm not sure what kind of recourse there is for selling or rehoming the dog but I'm sure the breeder wouldn't be too happy about it.
That's true, they may not. I am just concerned about Ziggy's chip information not being current:/ I was told I needed to go through the people whose info is on the chip:/
I personaly wouldn't pursue it. Technically the vet shouldn't have even given you the old owner's information at all because that is violating some serious confidentiality there. Like some others have said, many people would not appreciate you contacting them for information on a dog they gave up on several years ago. I think when you take on an adult dog, unless you are getting it directly from a breeder who raised the dog, you just have to accept you will never know his past. None of his owners did him any favors by constantly passing him off to other people, they may even have some guilt about giving him up and that guilt may turn to anger if you contact them. He's found a great home now, I'd just let his past be the past and focus on the future you guys wil have together.
Thank you, Melissa. I should have been a bit more clear I suppose.

You might be able to have a second chip put in. It would probably cause a bit of confusion when scanned because they would have two different names pop up, but at least you'd have your name on record. You would definitely have to discuss this with your Veterinarian, though.
Is there any way to contact the two foster families between the original owners and yourself? Perhaps the first foster has some sort of documentation showing that Ziggy was given up by the original owners. If nothing else, maybe you could get some insight into what the owners were like and how they and Ziggy parted ways.
I know it'll probably be a bit awkward, perhaps even uncomfortable, but if Ziggy should get lost then they would be contacting the original owners instead of you. That could cause all sorts of problems and end up being a big mess. My opinion, then, is that you should contact them sometime soon to get this all worked out.
Maybe just calling Avid and asking them if all the craigslist ads would be proof enough and show them that you have his previous medical records. Since the medical records are being passed down the line its clear he wasn't stolen. I do know many animals with 2 chips as well, but if animal control is scanning them, if they find one chip they will stop scanning so it would be hit or miss whether they find your chip or the old owners. So I would first call AVID, tell them you are his 4th owner and he was passed from owner to owner on craigslist, tell them the old owners gave you all his vet information but since it was not from a rescue you don't have proof of adoption beyond his medical records. Maybe they will allow that. Also, AVID may be able to contact the old owner to verify that he wasn't stolen. That's what they did when I sold my horse. She was microchipped through AVID and when the new owner tried to update her chip information AVID called me to verify she wasn't stolen and I said yes I sold her and then they allowed the information to be changed.
