So we were thinking about trying out a martingale collar for Stanley. I see they come in two styles - traditional and the chain loop style. Is there any real difference between the two that makes one better than the other? Advice please!

The one that is a combo of nylon and chain is preferable because not only does it offer the tightening effect of a Martingale but the chain also makes a snapping sound that helps correct the dog and snap them out of whatever it is they were doing. If you are looking to use one to assist with training I would recommend this one.
We use Martingale collars on both our Corgis, and I love them. We use the 'combo' type that is part nylon. I ONLY put the collar on when we go for a walk. I would never leave a Martingale on a dog when off leash. Our dogs respond very well to the martingale, the trick is to get it up high on the neck, just below the jaw-- and make sure it's loose until you use it for a correction, then it tightens for a second or so. Good luck!
I cut the chain off ours to save weight and noise. Also cut out adjustment buckle and stitched it down. Fine adjust with the knot. Photos in the FAQ:

I have heard good and bad things about those collars. My sister got one for her lab when she was pregnant and the people at the store swore it would make walks easier. When she tried to bring it back they just told her she had not used it right because it always works.... mney bak gaurantee by tukus. Anyway, just be aware that the collar is probably not as good as you think. My sister was very disapointed with it
We use the nylon/chain combo too. We keep it hooked to his leash, so we only use it when we go out on walks. It works really well for us. Good luck!
We too only put it on for walks, otherwise he just wears his regular collar. We have not had any issues with fur discoloration or rusting of the chain as someone mentioned but this could be because we don't leave it on hi constantly.

How well they work will depend on the dog. Some people swear by them. One of the trainers at our local Petsmart recommends that everyone in the class have one. Finn seems to react to it half the time. If he is very excited because of another dog then he will just pull despite the fact that it is tightening. They did say that if it didn't fit or I wasn't happy with it I could bring it back but I've decided to keep working with it.
If you were to get one, get the combo. The double nylon can get stiff and not tighten properly while the chain remains smooth. I've tried both and that's what I found worked best.
