I was wondering if anyone does lure coursing with their Corgis. Conan has a really intense prey drive and I think he would absolutely love it. Luckily, there is an all breed club that meets relatively close to us. It's about an hour and a half to two hours away, but since it doesn't involve any sort of training really it's not necessary that we go once a week or anything.
However, I am concerned with the amount of physical fitness Conan should have before hand. I have never seen lure coursing in person before and am really terrible at judging distances/lengths. It says the typical course is 400-600 yards, and I figure if a football field is 100 yards, that's a lot of lure coursing in one run. I know they have to be wide and long because of the turns the larger dogs have to make very quickly. I don't want to risk having Conan get any sort of injury. He gets at least one 30 minute walk a day, we try for two. And we take him out to a park to play fetch a few times a week to get some running in. The next trial isn't until October 3rd. Do you think we should step up his physical activity to get him more prepared for a run like that? They say to check with a vet if we're unsure.. but I've never taken a dog to the vet for a physical, so to speak, so I'm not sure they can tell me he'll be okay to run 600 yards by essentially seeing him in the exam room. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Anything is appreciated :) Thanks in advance!
