Hi All!

A question that is serious, and not meant to be gross in anyway, but a little backstory to how I came to ask this question. Chopper gets a Cesar(wet food) as a weekend treat. I've noticed that it gives him a bit of gas, but moreover I've noticed it makes his stool on the "runny" side. When we walk, we usually go on a bike trail and when he goes, it's usually in VERY tall grass and I can't find it even if I wanted to. When we don't go on a trail, I carry a plastic bag with me to clean up after him. With the loose stool though, it's not exactly solid enough to get a hold of...The last time I tried, it pretty much just smeared it into the pavement....Any suggestions or ideas? I know a good idea would be to stop giving him wet food, but that's a treat that he gets on the weekend. I like to spoil my little guy! :)

My personal preference is to pick it up, smeared or not. If it's on a trail, bring a spade :)
Eddy gets the runs on a hot day at the park. I usually scoop up as much as I can with the bag while going "gag" and then bury the rest with nearby mud, dirt, woodchips, whatever's around, so someone else's dog won't track through it.
I agree with the earlier answers. We walk in the woods on trails a lot, and even there we always try to take out whatever we bring in, including poo -- do the best you can, but definitely keep making the effort. And as for the spoiling.... (I should talk, I am basically the secretary/maid/chauffeur to my two, lol)
I'm wondering if going all week without the Cesar in his diet, and then suddenly having it on the weekend might be causing the upset... perhaps adding in a little bit daily during the week on top of the kibble (and of course cutting back on the kibble for however much wet you put in) might help get rid of the runs?

Another possibility is that something in the wet food is causing a sort of food intolerance, which will cause the runs. It's not exactly a high quality wet food. Just a thought. =^^;=
My neighbor will actually put down a paper towel when he sees his dog squat and then just throws it all out in a bag.
I always try to pick up Joshua's poo regardless of it's consistency (although the runny ones are extra gross and you're right, it's hard to even pick up with a baggie). My husband, however, doesn't feel the need to try to pick it up when it's runny like that. It annoys me but I'm tired of listening to the "but there's nothing to grab - nothing to pick up!" argument so I've kind of given up trying to convince him. I do most of the dog walking, generally, so it's rare that he is ever even in this situation with Joshua, luckily.
You should probably at least try, though people around here don't seems to mind letting their dog poop in my yard and leaving it for me to clean up (don't ever move to southern Louisiana). I'm sure there's lots of treats that Chopper would like just as much as the Cesar, maybe you could try something else? Like someone said, it really isn't a great food, maybe try putting some yogurt (Dax looooves yogurt. Make sure it's nonfat plain though) on his regular food or a new toy or a new bone or something like that as a treat. He'll forget all about the Cesar, trust me. I've even mixed yogurt with a little peanut butter and frozen them in the little ice trays as a treat, especially for when it's hot outside like it is now. I'm the queen of spoiling Dax, I can't go to any store that sells pet supplies without coming out with at least a little something for him. My boyfriend always tell me I should stop spoiling him, but he's so worth it. :)
I won't move to Southern Louisiana.
Lol. Good decision.
I always try to pick it up. If it's runny, or if I think it will be runny, I try to intercept it with a bag, so he poops on the bag. The paper towel idea that Natalie suggested might be less obtrusive.

We were at a park on Lake Ontario not too long ago and someone actually thanked me for cleaning up after Algy. So people do appreciate the effort!!
I actually had to tell a woman to pick up after her dog the other day. She was visiting my neighbor and letting her 2 huge boxer dogs run loose in my front yard, well of course one of them pooed right in front of my gate. I was outside trying to calm Leo down as he could see this dog in our yard and going crazy so I saw it. She paid no attention to her dogs or what they were doing until I pointed out that she needed to clean up after one of them. Why are people so rude as to think they don't have to clean up after their animals???? Our town has leash law but so many people don't care or the dog is leashed and messes in my yard and they just walk on. Makes me soooo mad. I pick up after the boys in the back yard every day to be a good neighbor, even though it is completely fenced and no one has to see or walk in it. My unfenced front yard seems to be other peoples' dogs and cats potty area.
Thank you all for answering! This may seem like an obvioius answer, but I'll admit my ignorance: why should the poo be picked up when he's on a bike trail? He goes on the side, or like I said in the VERY tall grass....Not that it makes it right, but I see other dog poo on the trail so I came to think that it didn't need to be done...Guess I'm wrong :). I do pick up after Chopper about 2-3 times a week. If I pick it up sooner than that, the "tools" I use (I little rake and shovel-esque thing), the poo gets stuck on the rake...Any ideas and or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
