My 9 week old pup peed on newspaper but poos beside the newspaper. Today this alternated: poo on newspaper and pee BESIDE newspaper again.

Anybody know why he's doing this? I mean, he knows the newspaper is where to eliminate, but he's not following the rules all the time. Very strange how he alternates too.

I get mixed advices sometimes about whether or not to potty train them inside first then outside, or do both.

Indoor potty training seems important to us because sometimes we might be out for dinner or something and if he needs to eliminate, then he'll automatically eliminate on a puppy pad. So we're trying to train him to eliminate on a puppy pad now. He has no problem going outside to eliminate at all. Another thing is, we live in Vancouver and it rains quite a lot here. This being said, it's not that great going out to the yard to take a dump in the rain because there would be a lot of clean up to do, and the dog is going to get wet outside a lot.
Yep, I was a newbie. Gracie was my first dog ever and I'm sure I confused heck out of her too with pens (returned to the store) and newspapers. The crate and taking her outside regularly to the same spot worked perfectly. Of course it meant getting out of bed at 3 am and coming home at lunch to let her out. She's 4 now and I'm ever so proud when I ask if she'd like to go for a car ride, tell her she has to go outside and pee-pee first and when I walk her out, she goes!!
You got some good advice but I would like to also voice that it might be a bad idea to teach a dog to pee/poop inside. From what I've seen, it rarely works the way you want it. It just teaches them that it's okay to pee/poop inside the house. They might not be able to tell the difference between the newspaper, carpet, pillow, etc. They might just assume anything cushion-y or absorbent might be okay to pee on. I'm saying this because my friend tried to do the same thing to her pup and now that her dog is 2 years old, she still has issues with potty training. It's getting better because she started taking her outside, but there are times when she pees on the carpet or blanket. It might be hard at first to take your pup out because they don't get the idea, but you're his owner so your job is to teach them what's right. There is no easy way. I'm not going to lie...some days I was so proud of my pup but other days I was ready to give her up. It'll take months of hard work before you can enjoy a well behaved dog once they hit 1-2 years. It's totally worth it though if you train them right. Good luck.

I would never suggest teaching a dog to go inside unless you're planning on being gone for 12 hours a day or something like that (and even then I would suggest daycare or a sitter). Even a puppy should be able to hold it an hour or two if you need to go out to dinner, and an adult dog should be able to make it 8-9 hours. It may make your potty training progress much more difficult and longer because once a dog learns that it is okay to potty inside, it's very difficult to break them of that habit. It's not so bad when they're a puppy, but I don't think you want an adult dog taking a giant poop in your house while you go out to dinner. Not to mention dogs sometimes get worms and other nasty things....not something I'd want on my floor even if it is on a pad.

Rain is not an issue for a corgi, they are a double coated breed so a simple rub with a towel will usually dry them off. I live in Wisconsin where we have snow a lot of the time and my dogs have zero problems going outside on their own to potty even in the worst weather.
