My 14 week-old pup, Loki, tries to eat lots of different things on his walks. This morning, he ate a piece of bark and swallowed it before I could remove it from his mouth. In addition to the mulch, he tried to eat - a small lava rock (spit that one out thankfully), a persimmons, dog poop, leaves, dirt, olives, random berries from a tree, bird poop ... you get the idea. I am still training him to walk with me, so I always have puppy treats on hand to get him to direct his attention to me, but they don't always work.
I always make sure to feed him first before we go for a walk, but he acts like he's STARVING (typical Corgi). I even mix some mashed veggies into his breakfast to make sure he feels a bit more full than usual. Is there anyway to curb him of his habit? My sister's dog just had a stomach operation to remove a piece of corn cob from his intestines, $1200 later ... I REALLY don't want this to happen to me! He's signed up for puppy classes, but he doesn't start until the 15th.
My friend suggested that I use a gentle leader on him... would this work?

Okay, thanks for the tip!
No head halters on a dog that young. Ivy's post is great - when you are transitioning to the outside world, remember to bring REALLY awesome treats with you (think real meat) so that he will prefer it over whatever icky stuff he might come across on the ground.
This totally worked!!I had some cheddar cheese that I cut into little bits, and played the name game with him during my lunch. His attention never strayed from me for more than a few seconds, and when he found something that looked more interesting, I said "na-aah! Leave it" and he did! Gave him the cheese immediately afterwards of course. It only took two pieces for his attention to me riveted on me. Thank you! It's funny how the simplest things never even occur to you when puppy training.. lol
